Blue Bear

Glass facade of Colorado Convention Center with Denver skyline

Few sculptures have captured a city’s personality quite like Denver’s Big Blue Bear, officially titled I See What You Mean. Towering 40 feet high and peering curiously into the glass façade of the Colorado Convention Center, the cobalt giant has become a symbol of Denver’s charm, playful, creative, and a little bit unexpected. Its pose, nose pressed to the window, feels almost human, a silent question to those inside: What’s going on in there?

Created by artist Lawrence Argent in 2005, the bear was meant to represent curiosity and connection between the city and the people who visit it. Its scale evokes awe, yet its demeanor is gentle, approachable, and almost whimsical. For locals, it’s more than public art, it’s a civic mascot, a constant reminder that even in a skyline of glass and steel, Denver still knows how to smile.

The Big Blue Bear wasn’t originally blue. Argent first envisioned the sculpture in a naturalistic brown tone, but during digital modeling, he accidentally shifted the hue, and instantly knew he’d found something better. That bold ultramarine became the bear’s defining feature, giving it the surreal quality of a dream against the neutral tones of downtown.

The piece weighs 10,000 pounds and was fabricated in segments of fiberglass and steel before being assembled on-site. Its scale bridges architecture and art, transforming the Convention Center into an open dialogue between city and sculpture. Beyond its playful nature, the bear reflects Denver’s personality: curious, welcoming, and never taking itself too seriously. Today, it’s one of the most photographed landmarks in Colorado, often serving as the backdrop for everything from weddings to comic conventions, proof that a little wonder can bring an entire city together.

The best time to visit the Blue Bear is in the morning or just before sunset, when the glass of the Convention Center reflects Denver’s soft mountain light. Stand at its feet and look up, the bear’s upward gaze naturally pulls your eyes toward the skyline, blending sculpture with scenery.

From there, explore the surrounding 14th Street corridor, where cafes and public art installations keep the creative atmosphere alive. For a unique view, head into the Convention Center’s atrium and see the world from the bear’s perspective, the city bustling beyond the glass. End your visit with a stroll toward Larimer Square or the Performing Arts Complex nearby. Like Denver itself, the Big Blue Bear invites you to stay curious, stay playful, and always look a little closer at what’s right in front of you.
