St Francis Plaza

Sunset glow on St. Francis Cathedral overlooking Santa Fe Plaza

St. Francis Plaza is where Santa Fe’s spirit seems to exhale, a sunlit square that captures the city’s rare balance of reverence and rhythm.

Set before the majestic façade of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the plaza feels both intimate and eternal, an open-air sanctuary where time seems to soften. Cobblestone paths lead you through a tapestry of sights and sounds: the rustle of cottonwoods in the breeze, the murmur of prayer drifting from the cathedral doors, and the low hum of conversation from travelers and locals alike. The air here feels different, lighter, almost sacred, as if charged by centuries of devotion and artistry. Bronze statues of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Kateri Tekakwitha stand as silent guardians of peace, their forms catching the light with each passing hour. Around the plaza, adobe-lined walkways, art galleries, and small gardens frame the cathedral’s golden stone, blending human craftsmanship with the land’s natural poetry. It’s the kind of place you don’t just see, you feel, and that feeling lingers long after you’ve walked away.

Though St. Francis Plaza feels like a natural extension of Santa Fe’s heart, its roots trace a deeper and more deliberate vision.

When Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy commissioned the Cathedral Basilica in the late 19th century, he imagined not only a grand house of worship but also a civic and spiritual center for the growing city. The open plaza that fronts the cathedral was intentionally designed as a transitional space, a threshold between sacred and public life. Over the years, the plaza has evolved from a formal church forecourt into one of Santa Fe’s most beloved gathering places. The bronze statue of St. Francis, sculpted by celebrated artist Glenna Goodacre, was added in 2004 to commemorate the city’s 400th anniversary, symbolizing humility, kindness, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Opposite him stands the statue of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American saint, whose presence honors the enduring bond between indigenous and Catholic traditions in New Mexico. Hidden among the landscaping are stones from the cathedral’s original 17th-century adobe chapel, quietly anchoring the plaza in four centuries of faith and resilience. Even the plaza’s layout reflects Santa Fe’s cultural mosaic, European geometry softened by the organic flow of Pueblo and Spanish Colonial design.

St. Francis Plaza is best experienced as both a beginning and an ending, a place to start your day with stillness or to close it in reflection.

Arrive early in the morning, when sunlight washes the cathedral’s façade in amber hues and the plaza is alive only with birdsong. Sit on one of the stone benches, take in the sculpture garden, and watch as the first worshippers drift through the cathedral’s heavy wooden doors. If you visit near midday, the plaza becomes a gentle crossroads, artists sketching in the shade, musicians strumming softly, and travelers pausing before exploring the nearby Santa Fe Plaza or Canyon Road. Late afternoon is especially magical; the air cools, and golden light spills across the courtyard, turning the cathedral towers into living beacons. You can pair your visit with a stroll through the Cathedral Park behind the basilica or stop by the nearby La Fonda Hotel for a drink on its terrace overlooking the city’s historic core. Whether you stay for five minutes or an hour, St. Francis Plaza offers something rare, a moment of stillness in the heart of beauty, where the sacred and the human meet in effortless grace.
