Carneros Château

Sparkling wine glasses lined up at Domaine Carneros tasting terrace

The Château at Domaine Carneros is a dream made solid, a sunlit echo of Champagne rising from California’s most elegant hillside.

Perched above the vineyards of Carneros, its limestone façade glows honey-gold against the valley sky, flanked by twin staircases and manicured terraces that spill into the vines below. From a distance, it looks transported, a piece of Champagne’s Marne Valley reborn in Napa, where symmetry meets sunlight and luxury feels effortless. Step inside and the world slows: chandeliers cast dappled light on marble floors, the hush of conversation fills vaulted rooms, and the aroma of sparkling wine drifts from fluted glasses. From its grand terrace, the landscape unfurls like a painting, rolling hills, endless vines, and the glint of distant bay light. The Château isn’t merely a building; it’s a statement, that California, too, can master the art of elegance.

The Château was the first of its kind in Napa Valley, an authentic French manor built not to imitate but to honor Champagne’s legacy.

Commissioned by Claude Taittinger of Champagne Taittinger and completed in 1989, it was modeled after Château de la Marquetterie, the Taittinger family estate in Pierry, near Épernay, France. Architect Peña D’Able translated the château’s classical French design into California’s modern context, using locally quarried stone and hand-carved limestone imported from Burgundy for detailing. The structure’s exact symmetry was intentional: it reflects the precision behind Taittinger’s sparkling wine philosophy, balance, patience, and proportion. Few realize that the château’s position atop the hill was chosen through sun mapping, ensuring the terrace receives the same gentle light at both dawn and dusk, ideal for both vines and visitors. Beneath its stately exterior lies a state-of-the-art production facility, with stainless steel fermentation tanks and cool cellars that mirror the Champagne region’s natural caves. The building’s interiors blend French refinement with California warmth, silk draperies, oak paneling, and wrought-iron balconies designed by Sonoma artisan Tony Natsoulas. The château’s main hall is lined with portraits of Taittinger family members and Eileen Crane, the founding CEO and winemaker whose guidance helped translate French legacy into Californian terroir. The structure is also a symbol of unity, a bridge between continents, vintages, and philosophies, reminding the world that craftsmanship, when grounded in respect, knows no borders.

To visit the Château at Domaine Carneros is to step into a living painting, every view, every glass, every breeze feels composed with care.

Located along Duhig Road, just off Highway 12, the estate is open by reservation, offering a range of terrace tastings, salon experiences, and guided tours. Begin at the base of the grand staircase, where stone urns frame the vineyard vista, it’s one of the most photographed approaches in Napa Valley. Ascend to the upper terrace, where seated tastings offer panoramic views stretching from Carneros’ wind-swept hills to the Mayacamas Mountains. The Classic Sparkling Flight introduces you to the estate’s signature cuvées, Brut Vintage, Rosé, and Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs, each presented with the quiet ceremony of Champagne service. For a deeper immersion, reserve the Art of Sparkling Tour, which includes a behind-the-scenes look at the cellar and the château’s grand salons. Visit in late afternoon, when the sun’s low arc paints the stone walls in amber light and the air fills with the faint scent of lavender from the gardens. Pair your tasting with a caviar flight or artisanal cheese plate, a ritual that feels distinctly French, yet grounded in Napa’s relaxed rhythm. Afterward, stroll through the formal gardens that frame the terrace, or linger on the balustrade as the valley begins to glow. The Château at Domaine Carneros in Napa Valley isn’t just a winery building, it’s an act of translation, where France’s centuries-old artistry found new voice in California light.
