Sterling Tasting Terraces

Exterior of Sterling Vineyards with gondola access

The Tasting Terraces at Sterling Vineyards are where the magic of elevation meets the intimacy of wine, open-air sanctuaries suspended between sky and vineyard.

Perched high above Calistoga, these sunlit platforms wrap around the whitewashed façade of the Sterling estate, offering views so vast they seem to hum with quiet reverence. Glass in hand, you stand at the intersection of nature and architecture: terracotta tiles warm beneath your feet, vines unfurl below like a living mosaic, and the air carries both lavender from the hillside and the faint minerality of crushed stone. Each terrace feels like a world of its own, some shaded and cloistered, others radiant and panoramic. The design encourages stillness; it’s less a tasting flight and more a conversation with the landscape. Every pour, a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, or Cabernet Reserve, seems to borrow something from the horizon, translating sunlight into flavor. The Tasting Terraces are not merely viewing decks; they’re where wine becomes an experience of place.

The Tasting Terraces were integral to Peter Newton’s original vision for Sterling Vineyards, conceived not just as spaces for tasting but as architectural expressions of calm.

When the estate opened in 1972, Newton insisted that guests experience the winery through light and air, a reflection of his time living in Greece, where terraced courtyards define both home and hospitality. The terraces were designed in collaboration with architect Martin Waterfield, who modeled their lines after Cycladic architecture, whitewashed walls, stone parapets, and shaded arcades that frame the valley’s shifting light. Each terrace was positioned to capture a specific vista: the South Terrace opens toward Mount St. Helena, the West Terrace overlooks the vineyards of Dunaweal Lane, and the East Terrace faces the sunrise over Pope Valley. Few realize that the terraces were built using a gravity-flow principle, the winery’s upper levels align with them so that wine could be gently transported through each stage of production without mechanical pumps. Beneath the tiles, a network of hidden ducts channels natural air currents, maintaining an ideal temperature for comfort and for protecting the wine served tableside. During the winery’s restoration in 2023, the terraces were carefully preserved, their ironwork railings refinished and the terracotta replaced with handmade tiles from a small workshop in Andalusia, Spain. Solar-integrated lighting was added subtly beneath the balustrades, ensuring that even twilight tastings glow without disrupting the view. The terraces stand today as living symbols of Sterling’s philosophy, where innovation bows to beauty, and architecture serves experience.

The Tasting Terraces at Sterling Vineyards are among the most extraordinary settings in all of Napa Valley, offering a sensory encounter that unfolds with every turn of light.

Your visit begins with the Aerial Tram, which ascends from the valley floor and delivers you directly to the upper terraces, the first moment of elevation before the first sip. Once you arrive, choose from experiences like the Silver Flight, featuring crisp white wines and rosés perfect for midday sunlight, or the Reserve Collection Tasting, highlighting deep, structured reds best enjoyed in the late afternoon glow. Each table is positioned for both privacy and panorama, with attendants who move like quiet curators of the view, adjusting umbrellas and pacing pours with the rhythm of the valley. Visit in late morning for clarity, the light sharp and crystalline, or at sunset, when the terraces turn honey-gold and the shadows of the vines stretch long toward the hills. Pair your flight with artisan cheeses, charcuterie, or Mediterranean bites, available à la carte, all curated to mirror the estate’s coastal terroir. Between tastings, wander along the terrace arcades, each opening framing the valley like a painting, from the bell towers of the Sterling estate above to the silver-green sea of vines below. Before descending, take one last slow lap around the South Terrace, where the air cools and the valley lights begin to shimmer like distant constellations. The Tasting Terraces at Sterling Vineyards in Napa Valley are not simply a place to drink, they’re where wine, wind, and sunlight converge in perfect equilibrium, a moment of stillness high above the world.
