USS Midway

Visitors touring the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum

USS Midway is a floating city of steel and stories, moored forever at the edge of San Diego Bay.

Step aboard, and the hum of the harbor fades into history. The deck stretches endlessly under the sun, and every sound, the clang of boots, the distant gulls, the faint lapping of water, seems to echo with purpose. Aircraft line the flight deck like guardians of memory: F-14 Tomcats, A-7 Corsairs, and the legendary F-4 Phantom, each with its own chapter in American aviation. Below, narrow corridors and berthing rooms reveal the rhythm of daily life for more than 4,500 sailors who once called this ship home. The Midway doesn’t just display history, it breathes it, wrapping visitors in the pulse of naval legacy and the grit of those who served.

Commissioned in 1945, the USS Midway was the longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, bridging World War II to Operation Desert Storm.

It launched aircraft in the Pacific, aided humanitarian missions across Asia, and represented American strength during the Cold War. After 47 years at sea, it became one of San Diego’s proudest museums, a living tribute to the men and women of naval aviation. Inside, you’ll find 29 restored aircraft, a recreated command bridge, and immersive simulators that let visitors feel the rush of a catapult launch. Docents, many of them retired Midway veterans, share firsthand accounts that turn metal and rivets into emotion and memory. From the galley’s scent of coffee to the radio room’s hum, every corner tells a story of courage, precision, and camaraderie at sea.

You’ll find the Midway Museum anchored along Navy Pier, steps from downtown and the Embarcadero.

Arrive early to explore the flight deck before the midday crowds, and bring your curiosity, it takes at least two hours to see it all. Don’t miss the Hangar Deck exhibits, the engine room, and the island bridge for panoramic harbor views. Pair your visit with a stroll along the Embarcadero Marina Park or a stop at Seaport Village for lunch overlooking the bay. Stay for sunset if you can, when the carrier’s silhouette glows gold against the skyline, the ship feels alive again, as though ready to set sail into the horizon it once called home.
