Ferndell Trail

Griffith Park view of downtown Los Angeles with mountains in background

The Ferndell Trail is one of Los Angeles’ quiet miracles, a shaded, storybook path tucked inside Griffith Park that feels a world away from the city’s rush. Beneath the canopy of sycamores and ferns, a narrow stream trickles beside the path, cooling the air and softening every sound.

You’ll pass moss-covered stones, rustic bridges, and families lingering over coffee at The Trails Café near the entrance. It’s a walk that hums with nostalgia, locals who grew up coming here now bring their children, hikers pause here on their way to the Observatory, and travelers stumble upon it and can’t quite believe something so lush exists minutes from Hollywood Boulevard. The magic of Ferndell isn’t in its length, but in its calm: a half-mile of pure serenity where the only things competing for attention are birdsong and breeze.

Ferndell’s origins date back to the 1910s, when city gardeners began cultivating ferns and tropical plants along this natural canyon creek. The miniature bridges and stone pathways were added during the 1930s as part of the Works Progress Administration’s beautification projects.

Over time, the area became one of the most beloved corners of Griffith Park, a living relic of Los Angeles’ early efforts to blend nature and artistry in urban spaces. The ferns here thrive thanks to the unique microclimate of the canyon, and many of the wooden railings and water features still follow their century-old designs. This lush enclave has even served as a filming location for old Hollywood productions, lending its fairy-tale aesthetic to generations of moviegoers.
