Grasslands Trail Head, Agoura Hills

Night view of Los Angeles city lights from Griffith Observatory terrace

Grasslands Trail Head is a scenic gateway into the rolling open landscapes of the Santa Monica Mountains where sweeping meadows, quiet dirt paths, and expansive sky create one of the most peaceful hiking environments in the Conejo Valley region.

Located along Chesebro Road near Palo Comado Canyon Road in Agoura Hills, the trailhead sits at the entrance to the Chesebro Canyon and Palo Comado Canyon trail network within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The moment you begin walking, the landscape opens into broad grass-covered hills framed by distant ridgelines and oak-dotted valleys. Wide trails wind gently across the terrain while hikers, trail runners, and equestrians move through the open space at an unhurried pace.

Grasslands Trail Head provides access to one of the rare grassland ecosystems preserved within the Santa Monica Mountains.

Unlike the dense chaparral that dominates much of Southern California's mountain terrain, these open grasslands form wide valley floors that support native wildlife and seasonal wildflower blooms. The Chesebro and Palo Comado canyon areas historically served as ranching land before being incorporated into the protected lands of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Today the preserved landscape offers a glimpse into the natural character that once defined much of the region's inland valleys before suburban development expanded through Los Angeles County.

Grasslands Trail Head fits naturally into a morning hike or late-afternoon walk when the sunlight softens across the open meadows.

Begin along the wide trail as it moves gradually into the canyon landscape, where the gentle elevation and expansive views encourage a steady, relaxed pace. The route rewards patience with wide vistas stretching across grassy hillsides while oak trees appear in clusters along the canyon floor. In spring, wildflowers scatter color across the fields, while autumn brings golden tones to the surrounding slopes. By the time the trail loops back toward Chesebro Road and the parking area comes into view, the lingering stillness carries the quiet beauty of one of the Santa Monica Mountains' most open and tranquil landscapes.
