Underwater Park

Sea lions lounging on the rocks at La Jolla Cove in San Diego

The La Jolla Underwater Park is an unseen world of canyons, kelp forests, and sea life stretching silently beneath the waves.

Unlike anything else on the California coast, this 6,000-acre protected marine reserve is both a sanctuary and an adventure playground, where snorkelers, divers, and kayakers share space with sea lions, bat rays, and bright orange Garibaldi. From the surface, it looks like calm blue water cradled by golden cliffs. Beneath, the landscape transforms into a cathedral of rock and light, two deep canyons plunging 500 feet, reefs alive with color, and sand flats rippled by gentle currents. The La Jolla Underwater Park is where ocean energy feels alive yet peaceful, a reminder that the wildest beauty isn’t always visible, sometimes, it’s waiting just below.

Established in 1970, the La Jolla Underwater Park represents one of California’s earliest efforts to protect marine life through conservation.

It’s divided into two sections: the Ecological Reserve, where fishing and boating are prohibited to allow natural ecosystems to thrive, and the Marine Refuge, which supports recreational diving and research. The underwater terrain includes a four-tiered system of canyons, plateaus, and drop-offs, the La Jolla Canyon alone cuts deeper than a 50-story building. Marine biologists often call it an “underwater Grand Canyon,” home to leopard sharks, sea turtles, and the region’s only permanent kelp forest. Above the waterline, you’ll find kayakers gliding past sea caves and seals basking near La Jolla Cove. Each tide redraws the boundaries between worlds, one wild, one human, yet both deeply connected through the rhythm of the sea.

You can access the La Jolla Underwater Park directly from La Jolla Shores Beach, where outfitters line Avenida de la Playa offering guided snorkel and kayak tours.

For the best visibility, visit in the morning before winds stir the surface. In late summer, the park comes alive with hundreds of harmless leopard sharks, making it one of the best shallow snorkeling spots in the world. For divers, local operators provide gear and navigation tips for exploring canyon walls and kelp forests safely. After your time in the water, walk up to The Marine Room for lunch with a view, where waves crash dramatically against the windows, or unwind at Ellen Browning Scripps Park to dry off under the sun. However you explore it, this underwater sanctuary reveals a side of San Diego most people never truly see, quiet, weightless, and endlessly alive.
