Pulchella Winery, Santa Clarita

Night view of Los Angeles city lights from Griffith Observatory terrace

Pulchella Winery is a rebellious little temple of RhΓ΄ne-style winemaking where bold California fruit meets a room full of laughter, conversation, and glasses lifted in quiet celebration.

Set along Main Street in Old Town Newhall, the tasting room feels more like a neighborhood gathering spot than a traditional wine estate, a place where locals drift in after work and visitors stumble into a surprisingly serious wine culture tucked inside Santa Clarita's historic downtown. The room hums with energy once evening settles in. Bottles line the walls, deep red blends swirl in dragonfly-etched glasses, and the scent of oak, dark fruit, and conversation fills the air. This is not Napa grandeur. It is something more intimate, more personal. The lighting stays warm, the staff pours generously, and every table seems to hold a group leaning closer together as the night unfolds. Pulchella's identity rests on one simple promise: wine made with intensity and personality. In a region where vineyards are not the dominant story, this tasting room quietly proves that serious winemaking can thrive anywhere passion decides to root itself.

Pulchella Winery began as a collaboration between winemakers Steve Lemley and Nate Hasper, two UC Davis, educated vintners who joined forces in 2009 to produce the winery's first vintage.

The pair had already spent years refining their approach to wine before launching the label, eventually building a reputation for powerful Rhône-inspired varietals and blends such as Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Viognier. Their philosophy leans deliberately rebellious. Rather than chasing trends, the winery focuses on small-batch production and expressive wines that emphasize intensity, structure, and personality. Production remains relatively limited, with roughly 1,000 to 1,500 cases bottled annually under the Pulchella label, while the founders also consult on additional wines for other vineyards. That smaller scale allows the winemakers to stay personally involved in every stage of production, from vineyard relationships to barrel aging decisions. Much of the fruit originates from Paso Robles vineyards, a region known for Rhône-style grapes that thrive in warm days and cool evenings. The tasting room itself opened in 2010 in the heart of Newhall, bringing the project out of the cellar and into the community. Since then, Pulchella has built a loyal following of wine club members and locals who return regularly for new releases, pickup parties, and relaxed tasting nights that feel more like gatherings than formal tastings.

Pulchella Winery fits beautifully into an evening wandering the historic streets of Old Town Newhall, where wine, conversation, and slow California nights naturally intertwine.

Plan your visit toward sunset, when the small tasting room begins to fill with the relaxed energy of locals settling into the evening. Start with a tasting flight to understand the house style. RhΓ΄ne-inspired reds often lead the lineup, Syrah layered with dark fruit and spice, Grenache blends carrying warmth and structure, and occasional white wines like Viognier offering aromatic contrast. The staff moves easily between education and storytelling, explaining vineyard sources or barrel choices without losing the laid-back mood that defines the room. Many visitors pair their tasting with food brought from nearby restaurants or casual bites picked up along Main Street, letting the wine become the center of a relaxed, shared table. The experience unfolds slowly, glasses refilled, bottles passed around, and conversations drifting across neighboring tables. Step outside afterward and Old Town Newhall continues the rhythm: soft streetlights, live music drifting from nearby venues, and the sense that the evening still has a few chapters left to write. Pulchella leaves behind the memory of a place where wine feels personal again, crafted with intention and shared with the easy warmth of a neighborhood tradition.
