The Hangar, Costa Mesa

Night view of Los Angeles city lights from Griffith Observatory terrace

The Hangar is a roaring steel cathedral of live music where touring artists, booming sound, and thousands of fans collide inside a historic aviation hangar.

Located within the OC Fair & Event Center along Arlington Drive in Costa Mesa, this massive indoor venue occupies a restored World War II aircraft hangar originally built for the Santa Ana Army Air Base. The architecture alone sets the tone: a sweeping curved roof, exposed steel ribs, and cavernous acoustics that amplify the energy of every performance. When the lights drop and the stage ignites, the space transforms instantly. Massive screens flare to life, guitars cut through the air, and the crowd rises together in a wave of sound and movement. The Hangar captures the thrilling electricity of a live concert in a room designed decades ago to house aircraft but now perfectly suited for music that demands scale.

The Hangar stands as one of Orange County's most distinctive concert venues because its structure was never originally intended for entertainment.

The building dates back to the early 1940s when the Santa Ana Army Air Base served as a major aviation training center during World War II. After the military base closed, portions of the property evolved into what is now the OC Fair & Event Center, preserving several of the historic hangars that once sheltered military aircraft. Rather than demolishing the structure, the site repurposed the building into a performance hall capable of hosting large concerts and live events. The result is a venue that feels dramatically different from modern theaters or arenas. The enormous open span of the hangar creates powerful acoustics and sightlines that place audiences remarkably close to the stage despite the building's scale. Over the years The Hangar has welcomed an eclectic range of touring artists, from rock bands and pop acts to tribute shows and large festival performances connected to the OC Fair. The industrial character of the building, steel beams, sweeping rooflines, and the raw sense of space, gives every show a cinematic atmosphere rarely found in traditional concert halls.

The Hangar works best as the centerpiece of a lively evening inside the OC Fair & Event Center campus.

Arrive early and wander through the fairgrounds area as the crowd begins gathering outside the venue, the anticipation building with every passing minute. As the doors open, step into the vast interior where stage lights glow against the curved roof and the sound system hums in preparation. Find your place on the floor or in the seating areas and let the performance unfold around you as the energy of the crowd rises with each song. Between sets, look around the room and notice how the historic aircraft hangar has been transformed into a modern concert arena. When the final encore ends and the crowd pours back into the Costa Mesa night, the echo of the music still lingers in the steel rafters overhead.
