Rings Fountain

Rings Fountain on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway is Boston's splash of pure joy, a playful oasis where water, light, and laughter fill the city's air.

Tucked between skyscrapers along the Greenway's Wharf District, the fountain erupts in synchronized arcs of mist and spray, its circular jets forming rings that rise and fall in rhythm. Children dart between bursts of water while office workers kick off their shoes at lunch, and the hum of downtown blends with the fountain's soothing pulse. On hot summer days, it's the city's most irresistible gathering spot, a public performance that feels spontaneous and alive. As the sun dips, the rings illuminate, transforming the space into a luminous dance of reflection and motion.

Installed in 2004 during the early stages of the Greenway's creation, Rings Fountain was designed by Boston-based landscape firm Halvorson Design Partnership as both artwork and engineering marvel.

It features 64 computer-controlled nozzles set into the granite plaza, each capable of sending jets up to 30 feet into the air in intricate, ever-changing patterns. Beneath the pavement lies a complex system of pumps and filters that recycle thousands of gallons of water per hour, ensuring the fountain remains crystal clear and environmentally efficient. At night, LED lighting transforms the plaza into a glowing ring of mist, part sculpture, part stage. The design was inspired by the geometry of ripples on water, evoking Boston's deep connection to its harbor. It's one of the Greenway's most beloved features, offering a rare mix of play, art, and cooling relief in the city's core.

Visit on a warm afternoon when the plaza is alive with families, tourists, and the joyful chaos of summer in motion.

Stand close enough to feel the mist on your skin, or take a seat on the edge to watch the choreography of water and light. If you're visiting at night, the illuminated jets create a mesmerizing spectacle against the city skyline. Bring a snack or drink from one of the nearby food trucks and let yourself linger, the fountain has a way of holding attention longer than you expect. Pair your stop with a stroll to the Greenway Carousel or the waterfront just across Atlantic Avenue. Rings Fountain isn't just a park feature, it's Boston's heartbeat in water form, where the city pauses to play.
