Shapiro Family Courtyard

Interior rotunda at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston with historic artwork

The Shapiro Family Courtyard is the MFA’s open heart, a soaring glass atrium where architecture, art, and light breathe together.

Linking the museum's historic wings with its modern expansions, the courtyard feels at once grand and tranquil. Sunlight floods through the transparent canopy, illuminating stone walls from the original building and the sleek glass lines of the new. Sculptures and visitors share the space in quiet equilibrium, while the hum of the New American Café blends softly with the echo of footsteps and conversation. It's a place where the museum pauses, inviting reflection between eras, ideas, and styles.

Completed in 2010 as part of the Art of the Americas Wing expansion, the courtyard was designed by the world-renowned firm Foster + Partners.

Its soaring glass roof, supported by an elegant steel lattice, unites the MFA's classical and contemporary architecture, a literal bridge between the past and present. The courtyard's name honors the Shapiro family, whose philanthropic support helped realize the museum's vision of openness and community. The space frequently hosts concerts, lectures, and evening events, its acoustics tuned to perfection by design. With a capacity for over 700 people yet a sense of intimacy, the courtyard has become one of Boston's most beloved civic gathering spaces, not just an architectural feat, but a living room for the city's cultural life.

Enter the courtyard from the Huntington Avenue entrance to experience the museum's most dramatic reveal.

Pause at the center to look upward, the sky becomes part of the architecture, then find a seat by the café for a coffee beneath the canopy of light. Visit at midday when the sun paints geometric shadows across the floor, or in the evening when the space glows like a lantern from within. Pair this stop with the adjacent Art of the Americas Wing or Contemporary Art galleries to see how the MFA's old and new halves meet in harmony. The Shapiro Family Courtyard isn't just a connector, it's the museum's breathing space, where art, architecture, and community converge in quiet brilliance.

MAKE IT REAL

Feels like stepping into a time machine but make it classy. One second you're in Egypt, next second you're lost in Monet's flowers. Honestly overwhelming but in the best way.
