The Oviatt, Los Angeles

Night view of Los Angeles city lights from Griffith Observatory terrace

The Oviatt is a glittering Art Deco landmark where 1920s glamour, architectural drama, and downtown elegance converge inside one of the city's most iconic historic venues.

Located on South Olive Street in the historic core of Downtown Los Angeles, the building rises within a district known for its preserved early-twentieth-century architecture and vibrant cultural revival. Inside, the venue reveals a world of ornate ceilings, geometric detailing, and rich design elements that reflect the bold optimism of the Art Deco era. Chandeliers glow against polished surfaces while sweeping staircases and dramatic rooms frame the space with cinematic presence. The atmosphere carries the unmistakable allure of old Hollywood, where history and design come together beneath one unforgettable roof.

The Oviatt traces its origins to the Oviatt Building, a celebrated 1927 Art Deco skyscraper developed by luxury retailer James Oviatt.

Originally constructed to house Oviatt's upscale haberdashery and offices, the building quickly became one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in Southern California. The penthouse suite at the top of the building gained particular fame for its lavish design, complete with imported Lalique glass panels, custom furnishings, and panoramic views of the growing city. Over time, the space evolved into a renowned event venue, preserving its historic design while welcoming modern celebrations. Today it stands as a rare surviving piece of Los Angeles' early luxury retail and architectural history.

The Oviatt fits naturally into a night exploring the architectural and cultural treasures of Downtown Los Angeles.

Arrive as evening lights illuminate the historic buildings that line Olive Street before stepping inside the venue's richly detailed interior. Guests gather beneath the Art Deco ceilings as music, conversation, and celebration fill the historic rooms. The space feels at once elegant and cinematic, as if every corner could belong in a classic Hollywood scene. When the night draws to a close and you return to the downtown streets below, the memory of that glittering interior lingers like a fragment of Los Angeles' golden age.
