Amir’s Garden, Los Angeles

Night view of Los Angeles city lights from Griffith Observatory terrace

Amir's Garden is what happens when one man refuses to accept that a burned hillside gets the last word.

Located inside Griffith Park above the Mineral Wells Trail near the intersection of Griffith Park Drive and the Amir's Garden trailhead off Vermont Avenue, this hand-built hillside sanctuary rises from land once scorched by wildfire into terraced gardens layered with succulents, cacti, shaded benches, and panoramic views stretching toward the San Fernando Valley and Downtown Los Angeles. The climb is steady and honest. You earn the clearing. And when you arrive, the city spreads out below you as if the reward was always meant to be seen from here.

Amir's Garden was built over decades by Amir Dialameh, an Iranian immigrant who began planting and hauling materials up the hillside after a 1971 fire left the slope barren.

Working largely by hand and often alone, he carved paths, installed irrigation, and planted drought-tolerant species that could survive Southern California's heat. The garden is not municipal design; it is persistence made visible, stonework set against hillside, shaded picnic tables positioned intentionally, vegetation layered to create pockets of stillness. Its placement within Griffith Park ties it into a vast urban wilderness system, yet the garden feels personal, almost defiant. This is restoration as devotion.

Amir's Garden demands a hike and rewards it with perspective.

Park near the Mineral Wells picnic area or along Griffith Park Drive, follow the marked trail upward, and bring water, the incline reminds you that beauty often requires effort. Arrive before sunset when the light catches the terraces and the city begins to glow below. Sit. Don't rush the descent. When you walk back down, the park feels larger and Los Angeles feels smaller, rearranged beneath the work of someone who believed in rebuilding what others would have left alone.
