Bell Canyon Park, West Hills

Night view of Los Angeles city lights from Griffith Observatory terrace

Bell Canyon Park is a quiet foothill preserve where dirt trails and chaparral-covered slopes rise along the western edge of the San Fernando Valley.

Located near Bell Canyon Boulevard and Valley Circle Boulevard in West Hills, just below the Simi Hills ridgeline and west of the 118 Freeway corridor, the park opens from residential streets into ascending fire roads and narrow hiking paths. Entry points lead quickly away from pavement into dry brush, oak clusters, and rolling hills that overlook rooftops and distant mountain contours. The terrain feels transitional, neither fully suburban nor fully remote, as elevation gradually replaces the Valley floor with open sky. West Hills, California borders preserved open space, and Bell Canyon Park situates that boundary at street level. The geography is foothill-driven and gradual.

Bell Canyon Park forms part of a larger network of trails connecting to regional open space corridors within the Simi Hills and Santa Susana foothills.

The area preserves native vegetation typical of Southern California's inland valleys, including sage scrub and scattered oak groves adapted to dry summers. The elevation is moderate but steady, offering vantage points toward the San Fernando Valley and, on clear days, layered mountain ridges beyond. Portions of the surrounding canyon system remain privately gated, creating a visual contrast between protected estates and public trail access. What many first-time visitors do not immediately register is how quickly city noise dissipates as you gain height. Within a short climb, the horizon widens and residential streets fall below the trail line. The park functions as both neighborhood access point and ridgeline approach.

Bell Canyon Park works best as a morning hike before midday heat intensifies on exposed slopes.

Begin from a Valley Circle Boulevard access point and follow the primary fire road upward before branching onto narrower side trails if desired. Bring water and plan for sun exposure along open segments. Pair the hike with nearby stops in West Hills or Chatsworth to maintain geographic continuity within the western Valley. When you descend back toward West Hills, California, the residential grid feels flatter than the foothill ridges you just crossed. Inside the park was a gradual climb from suburb to hillside open space.
