Lan Su Chinese Garden

Lan Su Chinese Garden is an authentic classical Chinese garden where Old Town Chinatown's cultural heritage, Ming Dynasty artistry, scholarly philosophy, and botanical harmony create one of the most faithful Chinese gardens outside China.

Set along Northwest Everett Street near Northwest 3rd Avenue and just steps from Chinatown Gateway, this tranquil walled garden surrounds visitors with elegant pavilions, zigzag bridges, Taihu scholar's rocks, koi-filled ponds, moon gates, covered walkways, and more than 500 plant species carefully arranged according to the principles of classical Suzhou garden design. Delicately balanced architecture, water, stone, poetry, and horticulture transform a full city block into a contemplative landscape where every view is intentionally composed as a living work of art. Every courtyard, corridor, and pavilion reflects more than two thousand years of Chinese landscape tradition. The result is a classical Chinese garden defined by cultural authenticity, artistic craftsmanship, and one of Portland's most immersive cultural experiences.

Lan Su Chinese Garden is best known for opening on September 14, 2000 as the result of Portland's sister-city partnership with Suzhou, China, after architects led by Kuang Zhen Yan and more than sixty-five artisans from Suzhou spent fourteen months constructing a 40,000 square foot Ming Dynasty-style scholar's garden using traditional techniques, approximately 500 tons of imported Taihu stone, handcrafted timber structures, carved architectural elements, and materials shipped directly from China. Originally named Portland Classical Chinese Garden before adopting the name Lan Su Chinese Garden during its tenth anniversary in 2010, the garden combines the Chinese names for Portland and Suzhou while symbolizing the β€œGarden of Awakening Orchids,” reflecting both cities' enduring cultural partnership and the poetic traditions central to classical Chinese garden design. Built at a cost of approximately $12.8 million, the garden faithfully integrates architecture, water, rock, plants, poetry, and symbolism according to centuries-old Suzhou principles, establishing one of the most authentic classical Chinese gardens outside China and an internationally respected center for Chinese art, horticulture, education, and cultural exchange.

Serpentine pathways, open pavilions, reflective water, and carefully framed sightlines invite visitors to experience changing perspectives that reveal new compositions with every step. Seasonal blossoms, centuries-old garden philosophy, cultural festivals, tea traditions, and scholarly arts continually reinforce the garden's role as a living expression of Chinese aesthetics. Every bridge, pavilion, and stone composition demonstrates how Lan Su Chinese Garden preserves an artistic tradition refined across generations of master designers and craftsmen.

Lan Su Chinese Garden is best experienced as the centerpiece of an exploration through Old Town Chinatown's historic streets, cultural institutions, and architectural heritage.

Begin at Chinatown Gateway, where Portland's symbolic entrance to Old Town Chinatown introduces the neighborhood's rich Chinese American heritage before entering Lan Su Chinese Garden for one of North America's finest classical garden experiences. Continue to Portland Chinatown Museum, whose compelling exhibitions deepen appreciation of the people and stories that shaped the neighborhood through generations of immigration and community building. Conclude at Union Station, where one of Portland's most recognizable civic buildings provides a memorable finale celebrating the history, architecture, and cultural diversity of the city's oldest district. The progression moves naturally from neighborhood gateway to immersive garden before concluding through two defining cultural destinations that reveal the enduring legacy of Old Town Chinatown.
