North Market

Historic Faneuil Hall marketplace in downtown Boston

The North Market Building is the quieter sibling of Quincy Market, a graceful row of 19th-century brick and granite that hums with Boston’s old-world charm.

Stretching along the northern edge of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, it once housed merchants selling produce, grain, and imported goods from ships docked nearby. Today, its historic arches and cobblestone frontage frame cafés, artisan boutiques, and local eateries that blend nostalgia with modern flavor. The rhythm here is slower than the bustle of the main hall, sunlight spilling through tall windows, the scent of roasting coffee drifting through open doors. It’s a place where Boston’s mercantile past still lingers in every brick, alive and welcoming.

Constructed in 1826 as part of Josiah Quincy’s bold plan to expand Boston’s commercial reach, the North Market Building mirrored its southern counterpart across the central hall.

Together, they formed a grand trio, North, South, and Quincy Markets, designed to streamline trade for a growing city. The North Market was originally the domain of butchers, fishmongers, and spice merchants, its second floor used for storage and auctions. By the mid-20th century, the building had fallen into disrepair before being reborn during the 1970s Faneuil Hall Marketplace restoration, which turned the district into one of America’s most beloved urban renewal success stories. Behind its historic façade lies a model of adaptive reuse, architecture that evolves without losing its soul.

After exploring the crowds of Quincy Market, stroll northward into the calmer rhythm of this elegant hall.

Step inside to browse local shops and galleries, then linger by the windows overlooking the harbor breeze. Visit in the morning for quiet coffee or midafternoon when street performers animate the nearby plaza. Pair this stop with the neighboring South Market and Faneuil Hall for a complete sense of Boston’s 19th-century commercial heart. In the evening, the red-brick walls glow warmly under lamplight, inviting you to slow down and stay awhile. The North Market Building isn’t just an annex to history, it’s where Boston’s mercantile elegance still thrives in the everyday.
