The Center for Fiction, Brooklyn

The Center for Fiction is a singular literary institution where Fort Greene's creative spirit, intellectual curiosity, and enduring culture of storytelling have established America's foremost home devoted entirely to the art of fiction.

Set along Lafayette Avenue near Ashland Place and just steps from Brooklyn Academy of Music, this contemporary literary center anchors the Brooklyn Cultural District with an inviting blend of bookstore, circulating library, writers' studios, public gathering spaces, and year-round literary programming. Relocating to Downtown Brooklyn in 2019, the institution created a spirited home where readers, authors, and emerging voices gather to celebrate the enduring power of storytelling. Warm architectural interiors, thoughtfully curated collections, and welcoming public spaces foster an atmosphere that feels equally suited for quiet reading, creative work, and lively literary conversation. Today, The Center for Fiction stands among Brooklyn's defining cultural institutions, preserving more than two centuries of literary history while inspiring the next generation of readers and writers.

The Center for Fiction is best known for being the only nonprofit literary organization in the United States devoted solely to fiction, tracing its origins to the Mercantile Library founded in 1821, more than eighty years before the New York Public Library, and continuing a literary legacy spanning over two centuries.

Originally established to provide New York's merchant clerks with access to books and education, the institution evolved alongside the city before narrowing its mission exclusively to fiction in 2005. Its 17,000-square-foot Brooklyn headquarters, opened in 2019, houses a circulating collection of more than 100,000 fiction titles, an independent bookstore, reading rooms, writers' studios, educational spaces, and a dedicated auditorium for acclaimed literary events. Through nationally recognized fellowships, awards, workshops, and public programs, the Center continues to champion emerging authors while connecting readers with some of the world's most celebrated contemporary writers.

The Center for Fiction is best experienced alongside the cultural landmarks that have transformed Fort Greene into one of New York City's premier arts districts.

Together, these landmarks reveal how literature, theater, dance, and music combine to make Fort Greene one of New York City's most dynamic cultural destinations.
