TKTS Steps

Interior of a Broadway theater with stage and audience before a performance

Few spots in New York capture the spirit of Broadway like the TKTS Red Steps in Times Square, part box office, part gathering place, and entirely iconic. Rising above the glowing intersection of 47th Street and Seventh Avenue, these crimson glass stairs are where theater lovers queue for same-day discount tickets and tourists perch to watch the world whirl by.

Climb the steps at sunset and you’ll feel it, that dizzy, cinematic sense of being at the center of everything. Beneath you, costumed performers hustle for tips; above, the billboards pulse in electric unison. The TKTS booth may be a ticket hub, but the steps themselves have evolved into something greater, a modern agora where strangers share excitement, selfies, and dreams of seeing their first Broadway show.

The TKTS booth, run by the nonprofit Theatre Development Fund, opened in 1973 as a lifeline for struggling productions and budget-conscious theatergoers alike. The now-famous glass staircase was added in 2008 as part of a major redesign that turned function into urban art.

Constructed from translucent red glass panels illuminated from within, the steps rest above a hidden architectural gem, the roof of the ticket booth itself. Beneath the glow, a team of staff and volunteers help thousands of visitors daily score seats to Broadway and Off-Broadway performances at up to half price. The structure’s design by Perkins Eastman won multiple architectural awards, transforming what was once a simple kiosk into one of New York’s most photographed landmarks. What many don’t realize is that every inch of the staircase was engineered for balance and durability, designed to hold hundreds of visitors while gleaming like a ruby in the heart of Manhattan.

For the full effect, visit the TKTS Red Steps in the early evening, just as the lights of Times Square flare to life. Arrive early if you’re buying tickets, queues form quickly, and shows sell out faster than you’d expect.

Once you’ve secured your seats, climb the steps and find a spot to pause. From here, the view is pure theater: taxis streaming below, marquees glittering ahead, and the buzz of the crowd weaving through the air like music. Take your photos, of course, but then take a breath. Let the energy sink in. Few places embody the shared pulse of New York quite like this, where art, anticipation, and architecture meet in one glowing moment before the curtain rises.

MAKE IT REAL

Bright lights spill across the marquees and every block hums with anticipation. Crowds shuffle in and out of theaters, and for a moment the whole street feels like one big stage. See a show if you have time!
