Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden

Scenic walkway and trees in City Park, New Orleans.

Besthoff Sculpture Garden sculpts calm, a serene fusion of art and nature nestled within New Orleans City Park.

Spread across eleven lush acres beside the New Orleans Museum of Art, this open-air gallery feels less like a formal museum and more like a daydream made of bronze, glass, and green. Over ninety sculptures by world-renowned artists rise among reflection pools, cypress trees, and winding footpaths, modern forms framed by timeless Louisiana beauty. Works by Botero, Miró, and Claes Oldenburg share space with contemporary installations that shimmer over water and shadow. The garden changes with the light: morning mist softens the silhouettes, while late afternoon sun ignites each sculpture in gold. Here, creativity breathes with the landscape, a quiet, contemplative conversation between human imagination and the natural world.

This garden began as a gift, a vision from philanthropist Sydney Besthoff and his wife, Walda, who believed art should live outdoors where everyone could feel it.

Their dream came alive in 2003 when the original garden opened beside the museum, transforming a corner of City Park into a global art destination. After its expansion in 2019, the garden doubled in size, adding a pedestrian bridge, an amphitheater, and more immersive contemporary works. The sculptures themselves represent over 25 countries and countless perspectives, making it one of the most diverse collections of its kind. The reflecting lagoons were carefully designed to mirror both the sculptures and the surrounding oaks, blurring the line between the man-made and the eternal.

Enter through the gates near the New Orleans Museum of Art and let time slow down.

Stroll the curving walkways beneath the canopy of live oaks, pausing at the water's edge to watch reflections shift with the breeze. Visit early morning for quiet contemplation or around sunset when the light turns the entire garden amber and soft. Bring a coffee from nearby Morning Call Café, sit on a bench framed by cypress knees, and just listen, to birds, to water, to silence. If you have more time, pair your visit with the museum next door or a leisurely walk through City Park's lagoons. Whether you come for art, peace, or simple wonder, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden offers all three, each as graceful as the sculptures themselves.

MAKE IT REAL

Biggest plot twist was realizing this park is bigger than central park. But quieter. Prettier. And with way better beignets waiting on the other side.
