The Shed, New York

Modern architecture and public spaces at Hudson Yards in New York City

The Shed is a groundbreaking cultural center where Hudson Yards' architectural experimentation, contemporary creativity, multidisciplinary performance, and artistic innovation redefine how cultural institutions engage with the public.

Set along Hudson Boulevard near 30 Hudson Yards and just steps from The Vessel, this transformative venue combines galleries, performance spaces, theaters, rehearsal studios, and an extraordinary movable outer shell into one of the world's most technologically advanced cultural institutions. Dynamic architecture, flexible interiors, and continually evolving exhibitions create an environment where visual art, music, dance, theater, fashion, film, and digital media seamlessly intersect. Every visit reveals another expression of artistic experimentation. The result is a cultural experience defined by innovation, adaptability, and one of New York City's most ambitious contemporary arts venues.

The Shed is best known for introducing one of the world's first large-scale transformable arts buildings when it opened on 5 April 2019 as the cultural centerpiece of Hudson Yards, allowing its telescoping outer shell to roll approximately 120 feet (37 meters) along massive steel rails in just five minutes to nearly double the institution's performance capacity. Conceived as part of the Hudson Yards master plan and designed through a collaboration between Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, the approximately 200,000-square-foot institution was envisioned as a flexible cultural platform capable of adapting to artistic forms that had yet to be invented. Its remarkable kinetic shell, clad in translucent ETFE cushions similar to those used at Allianz Arena in Munich, rides on six-foot-diameter steel wheels powered by an electric drive system requiring surprisingly little energy despite moving thousands of tons of structural steel. When extended over the adjacent plaza, the shell creates The McCourt, a soaring column-free performance hall accommodating approximately 2,000 standing or 1,250 seated guests for concerts, immersive installations, theatrical productions, fashion presentations, and large-scale multimedia events. Inside, the building also contains Level 2 Gallery, Level 4 Gallery, the Kenneth C. Griffin Theater, rehearsal studios, creative laboratories, and educational spaces that support year-round interdisciplinary programming. Since opening, The Shed has commissioned and premiered original works by internationally acclaimed artists including Steve McQueen, RenΓ©e Fleming, BjΓΆrk, Trisha Donnelly, TomΓ‘s Saraceno, Anne Imhof, and numerous emerging creators, reinforcing its founding mission to produce new work. The institution's flexible architecture has become an internationally influential model for twenty-first-century cultural design, demonstrating how buildings can evolve alongside changing artistic practices while anchoring one of the largest private urban redevelopment projects in American history. Together, pioneering kinetic engineering, visionary architectural design, interdisciplinary artistic production, and continual creative reinvention establish The Shed as one of the world's most innovative cultural institutions.

The building demonstrates how architecture itself can become an active participant in artistic production by physically transforming to meet the needs of each exhibition, performance, or installation. Revolutionary engineering, internationally acclaimed design, continually commissioned original works, and an uncompromising commitment to creative experimentation continue reinforcing The Shed's position among the world's most influential contemporary arts institutions while redefining what a cultural center can become.

The Shed is best experienced as part of an exploration through Hudson Yards' extraordinary contemporary architecture.

Begin at The Vessel, where the neighborhood's signature sculptural landmark introduces Hudson Yards' ambitious urban design before exploring The Shed. Continue to Edge at Hudson Yards, where breathtaking panoramic views provide an unforgettable perspective across Manhattan while showcasing the scale of the surrounding redevelopment. Conclude at 30 Hudson Yards, where one of New York City's tallest office towers provides a memorable finale celebrating the engineering innovation and architectural ambition that define Hudson Yards. The progression moves naturally from sculptural public space to skyline observation before concluding at the district's defining skyscraper, revealing why The Shed serves as the cultural heart of New York's most ambitious modern neighborhood.
