The Traveling Man

The Traveling Man rises from the heart of Deep Ellum, three gleaming storytellers of steel and soul that reflect Dallas's creative pulse.

They mark the rebirth of a neighborhood once divided by the old Good-Latimer tunnel, now transformed into an open-air gallery of imagination and pride. Designed by Brad Oldham and Brandon Oldenburg, each figure captures a poetic moment in motion, Awakening, Walking Tall, and Waiting on a Train. The mirrored surfaces shimmer with the rhythm of passing trains, murals, and street musicians, making every visit feel alive and cinematic. The 38-foot Walking Tall towers above the skyline like a watchful guardian, his guitar-shaped body nodding to Deep Ellum's musical roots. Together, they tell a story of resilience, artistry, and movement, the neighborhood's own anthem rendered in steel.

These sculptures were born from Deep Ellum's transformation, a phoenix moment in public art.

After the tunnel's demolition in 2007, the city commissioned an installation that could capture the district's vibrant energy. The artists responded with a creation that bridges nostalgia and futurism: a metallic folk hero who embodies the neighborhood's evolution. Every bolt, curve, and rivet was welded by hand, blending industrial craftsmanship with emotional warmth. The figures' chrome birds represent freedom and collaboration, symbols of how art, music, and community keep Deep Ellum in flight. Their design nods to mid-century optimism, reimagined through the lens of local culture and jazz-inspired motion.

Start your walk at Awakening near Good-Latimer and Gaston, then follow his journey north toward Elm Street to see all three pieces.

Pause along the way to explore Deep Ellum's murals, cafés, and record stores that pulse with the same creative energy. The sculptures shine brightest at golden hour, when the sun's reflection turns their steel bodies to liquid light. End your route with dinner or drinks nearby, perhaps at Deep Ellum Brewing Company or AllGood Café, to complete the experience. The Traveling Man isn’t just photo stops; they're the neighborhood's beating heart, a reminder that movement, like music, never truly ends.

“Brick walls shout with graffiti, neon signs hum, guitars wail. It's loud, raw, and absolutely refuses to be quiet for anyone.”
