Expedition Everest

Bioluminescent-inspired landscape of Pandora at Animal Kingdom in Orlando

Expedition Everest Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park is an odyssey through legend, fear, and altitude, framed by one of Disney's most stunning backdrops.

Your journey begins in a Nepalese village nestled at the mountain's base, where prayer flags flutter, expedition gear lines the walls, and whispers of a mysterious guardian echo through the air. The ascent feels steady at first, a climb past snow-dusted peaks and the sweeping horizon of the Himalayas. But at the summit, the track abruptly ends, twisted and torn apart by something unseen. Your train plunges backward into darkness, spinning through icy caves before a shadow looms, the mighty Yeti, protector of the mountain, roaring as you race past. Every drop and twist feels more alive than mechanical, as if the mountain itself is breathing. Expedition Everest ride is a masterpiece of pacing, serene, suspenseful, then utterly wild, blending ancient myth with raw motion.

Expedition Everest coaster, opened in 2006, remains one of Disney's most complex attractions ever built.

The mountain stands 199.5 feet tall, just shy of aviation restrictions, and required nearly 2,000 gallons of paint to achieve its lifelike layers of snow, rock, and sediment. The Yeti animatronic, nicknamed β€œA-mode,” was the largest figure ever created by Imagineering, capable of lunging 5 feet in a single motion before being frozen in place due to stress fractures in its foundation. The ride's dual-track system is hidden inside the mountain, twisting over itself in a maze of steel that simulates forward and backward movement seamlessly. Even the village queue tells a story, filled with artifacts, field notes, and torn maps that build the legend of the Yeti long before you ever see its shadow. The sound design blends wind, chanting, and the Yeti's growl into a spine-tingling symphony of myth and machinery.

Tackle Expedition Everest early in the day or right before park closing, when lines are shortest and temperatures cool enough to make the Himalayan setting feel real.

For the best view, ride in the front row to see the broken track reveal itself at the summit; for the most intense experience, go in the back where the drops hit harder. Pair your adventure with Kali River Rapids and Dinosaur for a full circuit of Animal Kingdom's thrill rides. After conquering the mountain, unwind at Yak & Yeti Restaurant nearby or grab a cold drink at Thirsty River Bar while watching other adventurers brave the climb. As you look back at the snow-capped peak catching the afternoon sun, you'll feel it, that rare Disney magic that makes fiction feel like folklore. Expedition Everest stands as a monument to courage, craft, and the call of the unknown.
