Atelier des Lumières, Paris

Atelier des Lumières is an immersive digital art center where Sainte-Marguerite's industrial heritage, grand projection technology, artistic innovation, and contemporary creativity converge inside one of Paris's most extraordinary cultural transformations.

Set along Rue Saint-Maur near Rue Saint-Ambroise and just steps from Square Gardette, this spectacular cultural venue surrounds visitors with floor-to-ceiling digital projections that flow across towering walls, soaring ceilings, steel structures, and reflective surfaces inside a beautifully preserved nineteenth-century iron foundry. Monumental moving images, synchronized orchestral soundtracks, and continuously shifting visual compositions dissolve the boundaries between architecture and art while preserving the raw industrial character of the historic building. Carefully restored brickwork, exposed metal frameworks, and cavernous volumes provide a dramatic setting where classical masterpieces and contemporary digital creation unfold on an unprecedented scale. The result is a cultural institution defined by technological innovation, architectural preservation, and one of Paris's most captivating immersive art experiences.

Atelier des Lumières is best known for opening in 2018 after Culturespaces transformed the former Plichon Foundry, established in 1835 and later known as the Chemin-Vert Foundry, into France's first permanent center for grand digital art exhibitions using the AMIEX projection system developed by Gianfranco Iannuzzi, Renato Gatto, and Massimiliano Siccardi. Preserving approximately 3,300 square meters of industrial architecture, including walls rising nearly 10 meters high, the project retained the foundry's original brick halls, chimneys, metal structures, and workshop volumes while installing more than 140 laser video projectors, a spatialized sound system with dozens of speakers, and advanced digital technologies capable of projecting thousands of moving images across every surface. Since opening, Atelier des Lumières has welcomed millions of visitors through internationally acclaimed immersive exhibitions dedicated to artists including Gustav Klimt, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and numerous contemporary creators, establishing one of Europe's leading destinations for large-scale experiential digital art.

Industrial history continues shaping every exhibition as towering furnaces, exposed steel beams, expansive masonry walls, and preserved factory spaces become integral components of each artistic presentation. Light, movement, color, and music continuously transform the grand interior into a living canvas where visitors walk freely through evolving compositions that celebrate painting, architecture, technology, and sound as a unified experience. Every exhibition demonstrates how sensitive adaptive reuse, pioneering digital engineering, and cultural ambition combined to reinvent a nineteenth-century industrial complex as one of the world's foremost immersive art venues.

Atelier des Lumières is best experienced as the centerpiece of an exploration through eastern Paris's creative institutions, historic streets, and contemporary cultural destinations.
