Why you should experience BAIA in Tokyo, Japan.
BAIA is a cinematic nightclub where Udagawacho's fashion culture, Roy Nachum's contemporary-art sensibility, Akitoshi Imafuku's subterranean architecture and a formidable international booking history turn a five-level building opposite Shibuya Parco into a nocturnal world of its own.
Set along the streets near Spain-zaka and just steps from Shibuya Parco, the club unfolds through mortar surfaces, turquoise-green illumination and marble details developed around the idea of a cave appearing unexpectedly within the city. Roy Nachum led the design with supermaniac's Akitoshi Imafuku and Lily Sugiyama, extending that concept vertically through interconnected rooms before the building breaks open at its rooftop terrace. Sound, shifting illumination and the compressed darkness of the principal club spaces intensify the subterranean idea, giving DJs and live performers an environment capable of changing character dramatically between events. The result is a Udagawacho club where authored architecture and international nightlife programming operate as parts of the same immersive concept.
What you should know about BAIA.
BAIA is best known for turning a Shibuya nightclub into a collaboration between internationally established creative figures, fashion culture and global music programming. New York-based artist Roy Nachum led the interior concept with supermaniac designers Akitoshi Imafuku and Lily Sugiyama, developing the entire building around a βcave within the cityβ expressed through restrained mortar surfaces and emerald-green illumination; the project subsequently won the DNA Paris Design Award for Hospitality, and Imafuku received a Silver A' Design Award for the interior. Nightclub director Jason Levy brought experience from clubs in the United States and Europe into that architectural structure, with CMO Rina Negishi helping develop BAIA's international positioning as David Beckham, Ty Dolla $ign and Skrillex passed through the venue during its early years. Skrillex's surprise October 18, 2022 appearance with Drain Gang's Bladee became particularly consequential: the producer used the Shibuya set to test unreleased music during a year of unusually few performances, including material connected with Fred again. and Bladee. Fashion quickly became another strand of the club's character when Burberry took over four floors for its September 2022 Lola Bag event, bringing Awich, Wata Igarashi and machΓ¬na into a global activation staged after the series began in Los Angeles. SWAG HOMMES and Y-3 followed with a November 2022 party headlined by Compton rapper Buddy and supported by KANDYTOWN's Minnesotah, DJ KANJI, FOOLISH MAN and nasthug, connecting American hip-hop with Tokyo's contemporary music and fashion networks. JΓ€germeister's Night Embassy extended that cultural range the following month through poweredby.tokyo and Chace Fedor, using BAIA for a two-day collision of fashion, music and queer culture. Fabolous subsequently made his first Japanese live appearance at BAIA in April 2023, extending an early booking history in which Nachum's architecture repeatedly became the setting for musicians, designers and international brands.
Mortar and turquoise illumination establish the physical logic before the music fully takes control, with the hard mineral surfaces and saturated light making the principal rooms feel excavated from the surrounding city. The sound system carries that enclosure into the body through Void Acoustics equipment installed across the venue, allowing low frequencies to occupy the concrete-heavy architecture as DJs move among hip-hop, R&B, house and electronic music. Adjustable lighting changes the turquoise foundation for individual productions, giving the same architecture a different visual temperature when a fashion takeover, live rapper or electronic set replaces the regular club program. Movement upward gradually releases that compression as successive rooms lead toward the rooftop, where open air and Shibuya's surrounding lights replace the cave-like enclosure below. BAIA makes vertical movement part of the night itself, carrying sound, darkness and mineral surfaces upward until the architecture finally opens onto the city that the club spends the preceding floors shutting out.
How to fold BAIA into your trip.
BAIA works as the nighttime culmination of an Udagawacho route tracing Shibuya's postwar commercial culture through PARCO's transformation of fashion, architecture and entertainment before descending into the district's contemporary club scene.
Begin at Shibuya Parco, whose first Udagawacho flagship arrived in 1973 and became central to PARCO's character as a transmitter of fashion, art and entertainment culture. Its 2019 reconstruction by Takenaka Corporation translated Shibuya's hills and streets into an exterior three-dimensional route spiraling toward the tenth floor, earning a 2020 Good Design Best 100 selection and the 64th BCS Award. Continue to PARCO Theater, the performance institution carried into that reconstruction as a 636-seat auditorium designed to preserve an unusually close relationship between stage and audience. Its position within the rebuilt complex extends the cultural role PARCO developed in Shibuya from retail into theater, placing live performance directly inside the architectural circulation conceived by Takenaka. Conclude at 2G, where NANZUKA founder Masashi Minamizuka, Medicom Toy president Tatsuhiko Akashi and Motofumi βPOGGYβ Kogi joined art, BE@RBRICK culture and fashion inside a hybrid studio conceived for the rebuilt PARCO. NANZUKA's gallery, Medicom Toy's art objects and POGGY's fashion curation collapse boundaries between collecting, street culture and luxury immediately before the night moves into BAIA. The progression moves from Shibuya Parco's half-century role in shaping Udagawacho culture through PARCO Theater's commitment to live performance into 2G's fusion of contemporary art, fashion and collectible design, establishing the creative ecosystem that BAIA carries beyond retail and exhibition into music after dark.
