Polar Science Museum, Tokyo

Polar Science Museum is an absorbing scientific collection where Midoricho's research campus, Antarctic exploration, extreme-environment engineering and active polar science converge around equipment brought back from some of the planet's most remote terrain.

Set within Tachikawa's academic district near Takamatsu Station and just steps from the National Institute of Polar Research, the museum places full-scale expedition equipment, geological specimens and scientific instruments inside a compact exhibition hall connected directly with Japan's principal polar-research institution. A black tracked snow vehicle immediately establishes the physical demands of Antarctic fieldwork, with its enclosed cabin and heavy engineering conveying the formidable requirements of overland travel across the continent. Antarctic ice, meteorites, drilling equipment and observation instruments shift attention between the polar environment and the technology developed to investigate it. The result is a museum where authentic expedition hardware and scientific specimens bring Antarctic and Arctic research into unusually direct physical contact with Tokyo.

Polar Science Museum is best known for translating the National Institute of Polar Research's Antarctic and Arctic fieldwork into an exhibition built around authentic scientific equipment, expedition artifacts and specimens, including KD604, the snow vehicle that carried Japanese researchers to the South Pole in 1968. NIPR was established on September 29, 1973 in Itabashi, inheriting a national Antarctic program whose first expedition had departed aboard Soya in 1956 and established Syowa Station in January 1957. The institute later relocated to a major research campus in Tachikawa, placing polar science alongside other national academic institutions in Midoricho. Polar Science Museum opened there on July 24, 2010, and cumulative attendance reached 401,216 by March 31, 2025. Exhibitions encompass atmospheric science, ice sheets, geology, biology, meteorites, expedition history and Syowa Station, with the four-meter aurora dome using imagery derived from polar observation. The institutional lineage, Tachikawa research campus, scientific collections and continuing fieldwork connect the museum directly with decades of Japanese investigation in Antarctica and the Arctic.

KD604 carries that history into one exceptionally consequential piece of engineering. Japan's ninth Antarctic expedition used four KD60-series vehicles for an inland journey designed around conditions approaching minus 60 degrees Celsius, elevations near 4,000 meters and thousands of kilometers of unsupported travel across Antarctica. KD603 failed during the expedition, but KD604 and two companion vehicles reached the South Pole on December 19, 1968 and completed an approximately 5,200-kilometer round trip over roughly five months. KD604 and KD605 subsequently supported inland research for approximately another decade and contributed to Antarctic meteorite discoveries that became internationally significant for planetary science. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers designated the surviving KD604 and KD605 Mechanical Engineering Heritage in 2014, with KD604 preserved at Polar Science Museum as the full-scale artifact connecting the expedition with its formidable engineering requirements. The South Pole journey, extended inland service, meteorite research and Mechanical Engineering Heritage designation give KD604 a scientific history reaching far past its famous 1968 destination.

Polar Science Museum works as the anchor for a daytime progression through Japanese literary scholarship, metropolitan public art and the conversion of Tachikawa's former military landscape into one of western Tokyo's largest public parks.

Begin at National Institute of Japanese Literature, founded in 1972 as Japan's first inter-university humanities research institute and developed around the collection, preservation and study of Japanese literary sources. The institution moved from Togoshi in Shinagawa to Tachikawa, where its extensive holdings of premodern Japanese books now support collaborative scholarship, exhibitions and digital research extending well beyond conventional literary history. Continue into the public spaces surrounding Green Springs, where the redevelopment of former government-related land introduced a substantial contemporary complex beside Showa Kinen Park and created an elevated pedestrian landscape connecting cultural, commercial and recreational functions north of Central Tachikawa. Conclude at Showa Kinen Park, occupying part of the enormous former military landscape surrounding Tachikawa Airfield, which opened in 1922 as an Imperial Japanese Army aviation base and later accommodated civilian aviation before returning exclusively to military use in 1933. American forces occupied the airfield after World War II, and full return of the approximately 580-hectare base to Japan in 1977 cleared the way for extensive reuse of the former military ground. The progression moves from the National Institute of Japanese Literature's preservation of Japan's written heritage through Tachikawa's contemporary public realm into the conversion of former military aviation ground at Showa Kinen Park, extending Polar Science Museum across scholarship, urban redevelopment and metropolitan land history.
