Pungumu, Tokyo

Pungumu is an exuberant Korean restaurant where Udagawacho's youth culture, New Okubo-born cooking, tabletop pork grilling and an unusually broad Korean repertoire bring the food culture of Tokyo's Koreatown into Central Shibuya.

Set along Shibuya Center-gai near Inokashira-dori and just steps from Shibuya Parco, the restaurant occupies the second floor of Antenna 21 amid one of Tokyo's densest shopping and entertainment districts. Samgyeopsal anchors the table through thick pork grilled beside diners, while kimchi, leafy wraps and scallion salad move the meat through fermented heat, cool crunch and fresh bite. Stews, cold noodles, marinated seafood and Korean fried chicken widen the progression well beyond barbecue, giving groups several routes through the cooking. The result is an Udagawacho restaurant where Pungumu carries the breadth of its New Okubo operation into Shibuya through grilled pork, seafood, noodles and bubbling jjigae.

Pungumu is best known in Tokyo for building its reputation in New Okubo before opening its Shibuya Center-gai restaurant on August 1, 2022, extending a Korean restaurant group whose original flagship became a major presence within the city's principal Korean dining district. The New Okubo flagship developed around a 160-seat operation and a repertoire led by fresh samgyeopsal using Margaret Pork, a branded pig raised with plant-derived lactic-acid bacteria and prized by the restaurant for clean-tasting fat and gentle sweetness. Pungumu expanded that pork program through ogyeopsal with the skin attached, seven-day-aged samgyeopsal and assorted cuts, while its wider kitchen incorporated Busan's dak-gop-sae combination of chicken, beef offal and shrimp alongside Korean fried chicken, sundubu jjigae and other regional staples. The Shibuya opening transferred that breadth into a 77-seat Center-gai restaurant, giving the group a major address outside New Okubo while retaining barbecue, stews, noodles and Korean seafood as central parts of the menu. Its current seafood repertoire reaches into ganjang gejang made with Korean swimming crab, soy-marinated shrimp and salmon, sannakji, yangnyeom gejang and tangtangi combining horse-meat yukhoe with live octopus, while the flagship received Tabelog Hot Restaurant recognition in both 2025 and 2026.

Samgyeopsal begins with thick pork browning against the grill until its exterior caramelizes and the fat softens, then leafy wraps and scallion salad cut through the richness with cool vegetables and sharp allium. Minari samgyeopsal shifts the same grilled pork toward the herb's clean, grassy fragrance, giving the meat a fresher finish without surrendering the char developed against the hot surface. Ganjang gejang takes the table toward chilled Korean swimming crab saturated with the house soy marinade, while sannakji brings resilient octopus dressed simply with sesame oil and salt before bubbling sundubu supplies a hot, chile-rich counterpoint. Pungumu makes that movement between fire, fermentation, raw seafood, herbs and stew central to the meal, allowing a shared table to travel across several distinct Korean preparations without reducing the restaurant to barbecue alone.

Pungumu works as the meal destination within an Udagawacho route connecting a major private ceramics collection, PARCO's half-century of creative production and a small park rebuilt as a contemporary gathering place for Shibuya.

Begin at Toguri Museum of Art, opened in 1987 from businessman Tohru Toguri's collection, where Imari and Nabeshima porcelain anchor holdings devoted principally to Japanese, Chinese and Korean ceramics. Continue to Shibuya Parco, whose first Udagawacho building opened in 1973 before the current complex debuted in November 2019, carrying PARCO's long association with fashion, art, music and youth culture into a building connected vertically by exterior walkways. Conclude at Kitaya Park, renewed in April 2021 through a Tokyu-led project and recognized with a 2022 Good Design Award, bringing lawn, terraces and street-facing activity into the northern edge of the district. The progression carries Udagawacho through Toguri's ceramics, PARCO's creative history and Kitaya Park's contemporary public realm before Pungumu closes the route with the Korean cooking that arrived in Center-gai in 2022.
