Set within Kitanomaru Park near Chidorigafuchi Moat and just steps from the former Edo Castle grounds, the five-story museum spreads outward through a radial plan wrapped in concrete screens punctured by star-shaped openings, an exterior composition conceived around the image of the hands of science. Interior galleries shift between electricity, motors, construction, medicine, optics, mechanics and large-scale experimentation, giving the building an exploratory rhythm closely aligned with its unusual geometry. FOREST on the fifth floor pushes that approach toward direct investigation through installations designed to communicate physical principles with minimal explanatory text. The result is a science museum whose architecture and exhibition design turn experimentation into the organizing principle of the encounter.

Science Museum is best known for translating Japan's industrial and scientific development into direct experimentation, a mission created by the Japan Science Foundation during a period of intense national investment in science and technology. The foundation was established in 1960 under chairman Chikara Kurata, then president of Hitachi, with authorization from the Science and Technology Agency and a mandate centered on scientific knowledge and technical education. Kitanomaru became the physical center of that program four years later, when the foundation completed the Science Museum on April 9, 1964 and began public operation on April 12. The same institutional campaign also produced Kagaku-Gijutsu-Gakuen High School and Tokyo 12 Channel in 1964, linking museum education, formal schooling and television broadcasting within a broader strategy for communicating science. A major public milestone followed in August 1970 when the museum presented a Moon rock exhibition months after Expo '70 in Osaka had introduced Apollo samples to enormous Japanese audiences. Exhibition renewal through participating industries began systematically in 1974, establishing a model through which technical fields and industrial organizations continually revised displays as technologies developed. A sister-museum agreement with Philadelphia's Franklin Institute followed that October, and the foundation subsequently operated the government's History Pavilion and Children's Plaza at the 1985 International Exposition in Tsukuba. Science Museum consequently emerged from a coordinated postwar effort connecting industry, education, broadcasting and public science communication, giving the institution a role extending well beyond its individual exhibition galleries.

Interactive instruction developed into the museum's principal educational mechanism as successive generations of galleries shifted emphasis from observing technology toward manipulating the principles behind it. Approximately 20 exhibition rooms now support around 20 varieties of experimental programs conducted roughly 40 times per day, with about 200,000 elementary and junior-high students from approximately 2,500 schools participating annually. FOREST, completed in 1996 as the museum's Play, Creation and Discovery Forest, concentrates mechanics, optics, sound and perceptual phenomena into installations intended to communicate through physical investigation with almost no explanatory panels. Synra Dome added three-dimensional full-digital projection in 2008, expanding that experimental approach into immersive visualization. Science Stadium supplies another format through a theater-style experimental area equipped with a large image system and seating for approximately 40 people, placing live demonstrations inside a dedicated presentation environment. Current galleries extend the model through Denki Factory, Atomic Station Geo-Lab, Medicine Laboratory, Construction World, Tetsunomaru-koen 1-chome and Monodukurium, connecting fundamental scientific principles with the industrial systems built from them. FOREST, Synra Dome and Science Stadium establish a teaching structure in which physical demonstration remains the central mechanism for communicating scientific and technological principles across the museum.

Science Museum works as the anchor for a daytime progression through surviving Edo fortifications, modern Japanese art and the military history embedded across Kitanomaru.

Begin at Tayasu-mon Gate, positioned at the northern entrance of the former Edo Castle Kitanomaru on ground historically called Tayasudai before Tokugawa construction transformed the area. Sources mention a gate there by 1607, and the present masugata configuration dates to a 1636 reconstruction, making Tayasu-mon the oldest surviving architectural gate of Edo Castle; national Important Cultural Property designation followed in 1961. Continue to The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan's first national art museum, established in Kyobashi in 1952 before moving to Takebashi in 1969. Architect Taniguchi Yoshiro designed the present building beside the Edo Castle moat, and a collection exceeding 14,000 items now traces Japanese art from the late nineteenth century into the present alongside international works. Conclude at Kitanomaru Garden, whose ground passed from residences associated with branches of the Tokugawa family into an Imperial Guard military district between 1874 and 1945. Surviving evidence includes concrete bases for an anti-aircraft battery constructed in 1937 and a bronze equestrian statue of Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa, former commander of the Imperial Guard; the grounds became a public park in 1969 in commemoration of Emperor Showa's sixtieth birthday. The progression moves from Tayasu-mon Gate's seventeenth-century defensive architecture through Taniguchi Yoshiro's postwar museum for modern Japanese art into Kitanomaru's surviving Imperial Guard infrastructure, exposing three distinct political and cultural systems that occupied the ground surrounding Science Museum.
