Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel First Resort

Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel First Resort is a pioneering resort hotel where Maihama's reclaimed geography, Disney-era development, Japanese leisure culture and four decades of hospitality history converge at the property that inaugurated the district's official hotel era.

Set along Maihama Resort Line near Maihama Avenue and just steps from Tokyo Disneyland, the hotel occupies a 19,834-square-meter site within a district created from Tokyo Bay through the reclamation program that Oriental Land began in 1964. Maihama emerged from the final section of that undertaking, completed in 1970, before the area received its present name in 1975 from Urayasu no Mai, a ceremonial kagura dance associated with Emperor Jimmu. Tokyo Disneyland followed in 1983, converting Oriental Land's earlier vision for a major recreational complex into the nucleus of a destination whose hotels, railway infrastructure and entertainment facilities would continue expanding around the new park. The result is a property whose setting compresses an unusual sequence of Japanese development history, from engineered coastline and ceremonial nomenclature to the creation of one of Asia's most consequential resort districts.

Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel First Resort is best known for opening as Sunroute Plaza Tokyo on July 20, 1986 as the first participant in Oriental Land's newly established Tokyo Disneyland Official Hotel Program, beginning with 506 guestrooms only three years after Tokyo Disneyland opened. Oriental Land's official-hotel strategy quickly became part of the park's maturation, with Sunroute Plaza Tokyo followed by Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel and Tower, Tokyo Bay Hilton and Dai-ichi Hotel Tokyo Bay in 1988, then Tokyo Bay Hotel Tokyu in 1990, creating the first substantial lodging district around the park as Oriental Land entered profitability and developed its second capital-investment plan. Plaza Sunroute, established specifically for hotel management in December 1982, carried Sunroute Plaza Tokyo through that expansion before adding the South Side Wing in December 2003, an intervention that introduced 199 guestrooms and brought the property to 696 rooms as Tokyo Disney Resort marked its twentieth anniversary. Sunroute Plaza Tokyo grew alongside Oriental Land's transition from a single-park enterprise into a resort system, with Plaza Sunroute's hotel expansion arriving after Tokyo DisneySea and the Disney Resort Line had opened in 2001 and established Maihama as a multi-park destination.

Plaza Sunroute subsequently developed the property through a long sequence of themed redesigns that turned its guestrooms into a chronology of changing Japanese resort storytelling, beginning with Cruising Cabin in 2007 and continuing through Frontier Room and Mountain Room in 2011. Castle Room, Sky Restaurant Sunset and Sky Hall Carnival followed in 2013, Comfort Deluxe and Bride & Princess Suites in 2014, Captain's Room and Captain's Room Officer in 2017, and another Castle Room intervention with Empress Room in 2019, allowing maritime, frontier and royal narratives to accumulate across successive generations of the hotel. October 1, 2019 then severed the property's 33-year affiliation with the Sunroute hotel chain as Sunroute Plaza Tokyo became Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel First Resort, while Plaza Sunroute simultaneously became First Resort Co. and the hotel joined the group character already associated with Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel. First Resort Co. carried that lineage to July 20, 2026, when the property reached its fortieth anniversary as Maihama's earliest hotel, connecting the Sunroute name, Oriental Land's original official-hotel system and four decades of themed reinvention within one continuously operating resort.

Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel First Resort works as the anchor for an afternoon tracing the fishing culture, domestic architecture and reclaimed geography that existed before contemporary Maihama emerged along Tokyo Bay.

Begin at Urayasu City Folk Museum, opened in 2001 with an outdoor reconstruction of Urayasu as it appeared in 1952, where wooden houses, shops, shell-covered paths and surviving bekabune fishing boats reconstruct the coastal community whose economy depended on fishing, seaweed cultivation and shellfish before industrial pollution and reclamation altered its relationship with the bay. Continue to Former Otsuka Family Residence, an Edo-period house preserved in Horie and designated a Chiba Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property in 2002, where the low-lying domestic architecture recalls a community repeatedly exposed to flooding while making the scale of pre-reclamation Urayasu tangible. Conclude at Former Udagawa Family Residence, built in 1869 and designated by Urayasu City in 1982, where the Udagawa family operated successive businesses including rice, oil, kimono and general-goods commerce from a combined shop and residence that survives among the oldest domestic buildings in the city. The progression moves from Urayasu City Folk Museum's reconstructed fishing settlement through the Otsuka family's Edo-period domestic world into the Udagawa family's Meiji-era mercantile life, revealing the human settlement that preceded the reclamation, railways and resort economy surrounding Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel First Resort.
