Path, Tokyo

Path is a polished French bistro where Tomigaya's independent character, Taichi Hara's savory cooking, Yuichi Goto's pastry craft and an all-day Parisian approach unite serious technique with the ease of a neighborhood cafe.

Set along the streets between Yoyogi Park and Shibuya near Inokashira-dori and just steps from Yoyogi-Koen Station, the restaurant moves from morning pastries and composed breakfasts into a more elaborate dinner program as the day progresses. Croissants and pain de campagne emerge from the kitchen in the morning, while Hara's cooking draws Japanese ingredients, fermentation and international spices into a French foundation at night. Vinyl records accompany the service, reinforcing the relaxed character Hara and Goto deliberately chose after careers inside highly formal kitchens. The result is a Tomigaya restaurant where elite French training becomes accessible through bread, breakfast, wine and dinner.

Path is best known for reuniting chef Taichi Hara and pΓ’tissier Yuichi Goto, former colleagues at the two-MICHELIN-starred Cuisine(s) Michel Troisgros in Hyatt Regency Tokyo, before opening their Tomigaya restaurant in December 2015. Hara continued through the Tokyo restaurant world and opened Bistro Rojiura in Shibuya in 2011, while Goto followed a rarer international trajectory to Maison Troisgros in Roanne, where he became the three-MICHELIN-starred restaurant's first Asian chief pΓ’tissier. Goto returned to Japan considering an independent project and began discussing his plans with Hara; those exchanges developed into a joint restaurant built around combining Hara's savory kitchen with Goto's bread, pastry and dessert work throughout the day. Their decision gave Path an unusual culinary structure: morning service could place Goto's freshly baked croissants beside Hara's house-made ham, while dinner allowed the pair's MICHELIN-level training to operate through composed French cooking and desserts in the same informal room. Path subsequently earned selection in Tabelog's Cafe Top 100 in 2021 and Sweets Tokyo Top 100 in 2023, while MICHELIN Guide continues to classify the restaurant under French and contemporary cooking.

The Dutch pancake captures the partnership in a single dish, arriving dramatically inflated from the oven before settling around cool burrata, uncured ham and maple syrup. Salt from the ham cuts through the soft cheese and sweet syrup as the pancake moves between crisp raised edges and a tender center, turning breakfast into a sequence of savory richness and sweetness. Goto's croissants bring laminated layers and pronounced butter to the morning counter, while pain de campagne becomes the foundation for sandwiches filled with Hara's house-made ham and substantial pieces of cheese. Path draws its culinary character from that partnership between cook and pΓ’tissier, allowing dough, fermentation, cured meat, pastry and French technique to carry the same precision across breakfast and dinner.

Path works as the meal destination within a Tomigaya route connecting medieval worship, a major private porcelain collection and the musical legacy of one of twentieth-century Japan's most prolific composers.

Begin at Yoyogi Hachimangu, founded in 1212 after Arai Geki Tomoakira, a former retainer of shogun Minamoto no Yoriie, experienced a revelatory dream and enshrined Hachiman from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu; archaeological work in 1950 also uncovered a 5,000-year-old Jomon dwelling site on the shrine's hill. Continue to Toguri Museum of Art, opened in Shoto in November 1987 by collector Tohru Toguri on former Nabeshima family land, with 7,000 works centered on Imari and Nabeshima porcelain alongside Chinese and Korean ceramics. Conclude at Koga Masao Museum of Music, devoted to a composer who created more than 4,000 works, became the first president of the Japan Composers' Association in 1959 and received the People's Honour Award after his death in 1978. The progression carries Tomigaya and its neighboring streets through medieval devotion, Japanese porcelain collecting and Koga's immense popular-music legacy before Path closes the route with Hara and Goto's own union of French training and contemporary Tokyo cooking.
