Taverna Trastevere Milano

Taverna Trastevere Milano is a polished Roman restaurant where Brera-Moscova's cultivated urban character, the convivial cooking of the Italian capital, white-tablecloth refinement and a deep commitment to handmade pasta converge within an arched dining room on Via Statuto.

Set along Via Statuto near Via Solferino and just steps from Largo la Foppa, the restaurant occupies the northern threshold of Brera, where compact historic streets, galleries and established dining addresses give way to the broader metropolitan movement around Moscova. Exposed brick arches divide two warmly lit dining levels furnished with dark timber, burgundy accents, framed photographs and precisely dressed tables, with the ground-floor room opening toward the kitchen and the lower level revealing a dedicated pizza oven. Lunch and dinner unfold through a distinctly Roman rhythm, beginning with antipasti before substantial pasta courses and meat dishes take command, with an extensive wine presence and composed service giving the cooking a more formal Milanese setting. The result is a restaurant that translates the social warmth of a Roman taverna into a more polished Brera dining room, preserving generosity and recognizable regional character within an environment built for extended meals.

Taverna Trastevere Milano is best known for bringing the restaurant project created by longtime friends Nicolas Vaporidis and Alessandro Grappelli in London in 2019 back to Italy after an entrepreneurial relationship rooted in Vaporidis's first experience working in British hospitality. Vaporidis had moved to London at 18 and entered a restaurant seeking work, where Grappelli was the manager who hired him and initially assigned him to cut bread. The two remained close as Vaporidis built an acting career that included the 2006 film Notte prima degli esami, then reunited professionally to open Taverna Trastevere in Clapham on January 22, 2019. Vaporidis drew the restaurant's name from the Roman neighborhood where he grew up, conceiving the original 54-seat address around the food and social atmosphere he associated with home. The pandemic accelerated a profound change in his professional life when disruption to film work led him to concentrate increasingly on the London restaurant, taking orders, serving tables and handling daily hospitality himself. Success in Britain produced further food ventures and eventually a decision to establish Taverna Trastevere in Italy, with Vaporidis and Grappelli selecting Via Statuto at the Brera-Moscova threshold for their second principal expression of the concept. The Milan restaurant opened on December 22, 2023, turning Vaporidis's 42nd birthday into the date on which the project returned to his home country. Chef Ivano Paolucci, a Roman cook with professional experience abroad who also oversaw the London kitchen, established the culinary direction, supported at opening by pastry chef Valentina Tortorella. Alessandro Farioli led the dining room as general manager after an international career that included experience at The Waterside Inn in Bray under Diego Masciaga. Taverna Trastevere Milano consequently emerged from a friendship formed across restaurant work in London, a hospitality venture inspired by Vaporidis's childhood in Rome and a British success that eventually carried the project into one of Milan's most established dining districts.

The current menu opens Roman cooking through fried calf sweetbreads, trippa alla romana and fagioli e cotiche before polpette croccanti di quinto quarto pair fried offal with braised Tropea onion and black-garlic mayonnaise. Tonnarello cacio e cinque pepi develops the foundational pecorino-and-pepper combination through handmade square-section pasta and a blend of five peppercorns, expanding aroma and heat across the cheese emulsion. Rigatoni alla carbonara shifts toward egg, Pecorino Romano and cured pork cheek, with the pasta carrying a dense coating around its ridged surface and the guanciale introducing crisp fat against the sauce. Amatriciana develops guanciale through slow-cooked tomato, and gricia removes tomato from the equation to concentrate the relationship among cured pork, pecorino and pasta. Paccheri ai cinque pomodori builds another pasta course around five tomato varieties, giving acidity and sweetness multiple registers within a meatless preparation. Cappellacci filled with red prawn and buffalo ricotta move beyond the canonical Roman quartet through crustacean consommΓ© and buffalo extract, linking shellfish sweetness with dairy richness. Mediterranean octopus arrives with cime di rapa, buffalo blue-cheese fondue and powdered redcurrant, carrying bitterness, salinity and fruit acidity through a more composed second course. Taverna Trastevere Milano builds its cooking outward from recognizable Roman foundations, using handmade pasta, guanciale, pecorino and offal as recurring ingredients before opening the menu toward seafood, seasonal produce and more intricate contemporary preparations.

Taverna Trastevere Milano works as the anchor for an afternoon tracing medieval religious power, Enlightenment scientific education and Napoleonic collecting through the adjoining streets of Brera.

Begin at Chiesa di San Marco, whose documented history reaches 1254 when Lanfranco Settala, prior general of the Augustinian Hermits, ordered construction of a three-nave church incorporating earlier structures. San Marco became the Augustinians' Milanese mother house and accumulated architecture and art across subsequent centuries, with its surviving medieval bell tower and stone portal associated with Giovanni di Balduccio preserving the earlier complex beneath extensive Baroque interventions; the young Mozart also stayed in the rectory during his eighteenth-century time in Milan. Continue to Orto Botanico di Brera, created in 1774 and 1775 within Maria Theresa of Austria's program to turn Palazzo Brera into a center for education and research. Fulgenzio Vitman organized the garden into three sectors divided by two elliptical pools, supporting advanced teaching in medicine and pharmacy through medicinal plants before Napoleonic cultivation introduced increasing numbers of ornamental and exotic species; two 250-year-old Ginkgo biloba still rise within the arboretum. Conclude at Pinacoteca di Brera, officially established in 1809 after an educational collection had developed beside the Accademia di Belle Arti from 1776. Napoleonic suppression of religious institutions sent large altarpieces and paintings from churches and convents across Lombardy and the Kingdom of Italy into Brera, creating a state collection whose holdings now carry Italian painting from the Middle Ages through major works by Mantegna, Raphael, Bellini, Caravaggio and later masters. The progression moves from San Marco's medieval Augustinian foundation through Maria Theresa's scientific garden into Napoleon's state picture gallery, tracing successive religious, educational and artistic institutions across the streets surrounding Taverna Trastevere Milano.
