Asia Curry House, Tokyo

Asia Curry House is a singular Bangladeshi restaurant where Kinshicho's South Asian community, Sultan Tipu's home-country cooking, Bengali fish and meat curries and a tightly edited set-meal tradition helped turn one tiny counter into an influential address for Bangladeshi food in Tokyo.

Set along Kotobashi near Keiyo Road and just steps from Kinshicho Station, the five-seat restaurant places diners directly across from a kitchen surrounded by Bangladeshi spices, rice, pulses and condiments. Sultan built the original format around a single changing meal, shifting among mutton, beef, chicken, fish, dal and egg curries according to the day's cooking and available ingredients. Bengali preparations such as khichuri and hilsa fish deepen the regional focus, with Friday biryani developing into another enduring specialty. The result is a Kinshicho restaurant where Sultan's compact counter helped establish Bangladeshi home cooking as a distinct part of the neighborhood's culinary character.

Asia Curry House is best known for Sultan Tipu's role in helping turn Kinshicho into one of Tokyo's strongest concentrations of Bangladeshi cooking. Sultan built the restaurant around food recognizable from Bangladeshi homes, initially dispensing with conventional ordering altogether: the counter offered one complete meal for Β₯1,000, and the principal curry changed among mutton, beef, chicken, fish, dal and egg according to what Sultan chose to cook. The restaurant's reputation subsequently drew attention beyond its five seats, and GQ Japan credited Sultan as a central figure in Kinshicho's growing Bangladeshi restaurant scene as new compatriot-run kitchens gathered nearby. Family and staff also became part of the counter's history; Sultan's son Nejhum worked front of house after arriving in Japan, and cook Babur handled the kitchen during another period of the operation. National recognition followed through Tabelog's Curry Tokyo Top 100 in 2018, 2019 and 2020, then its Asian/Ethnic Tokyo Top 100 in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Sultan's restaurant moved from an exceptionally small home-style counter into a nationally recognized specialist whose success accompanied the emergence of a wider Bangladeshi dining cluster around Kinshicho.

Special mutton biryani brings long-grain rice and pieces of mutton together before egg curry and chicken curry add separate layers of spice and richness around the plate. Khichuri takes the rice in another direction, cooking grain and pulses into a softer Bengali preparation that Asia Curry House has paired with fried chicken, egg curry and beef jhol. Jhol introduces a looser, brothier curry structure, particularly suited to beef or fish, and hilsa carries the kitchen toward one of Bengali cooking's most culturally important river fish. Dal supplies a gentler pulse-based counterpoint before sharper pickles and fried components restore acidity, salt and texture across the set. Asia Curry House concentrates the pleasure of Bangladeshi home cooking into the interaction among rice, pulses, meat, fish and gravy, allowing the complete plate to develop as the components are eaten separately and combined.

Asia Curry House works as the dining anchor for an afternoon moving through Kinshicho and eastern Sumida via orchestral music, Hokusai's artistic legacy and the immense architectural project devoted to the history of Edo and Tokyo.

Begin at Sumida Triphony Hall, completed in 1997 by Nikken Sekkei with acoustic engineering by Nagata Acoustics as the home of the New Japan Philharmonic. Seiji Ozawa conducted the orchestra for its first sound in the hall on May 9 and returned for the October inauguration, while the 1,801-seat principal auditorium used a 1:10 acoustic model during development and suspended reflectors above the stage to strengthen ensemble conditions. Continue to Sumida Hokusai Museum, dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai in the ward where the ukiyo-e master was born and designed by Kazuyo Sejima of SANAA. The museum opened in 2016 with holdings spanning paintings, sketches and woodblock prints, placing Hokusai's long career inside a sharply faceted contemporary building by one of Japan's Pritzker Prize-winning architects. Conclude at Edo-Tokyo Museum, where Kiyonori Kikutake raised a 62.2-meter structure above Ryogoku for a museum inaugurated in 1993 and devoted to four centuries of metropolitan history beginning with Tokugawa Ieyasu's establishment in Edo. Koichi Sato based the museum logo on the eye of Toshusai Sharaku's 1794 portrait of actor Ichikawa Ebizo as Takemura Sadanoshin, carrying Edo-period visual culture into the institution's modern graphic design. The progression moves from Nikken Sekkei and Seiji Ozawa's orchestral project through Hokusai and Kazuyo Sejima into Kiyonori Kikutake's grand museum of metropolitan history, placing Asia Curry House within a broader Sumida district shaped by music, art and ambitious cultural architecture.
