Ayo Tacos, Milan

Ayo Tacos is a high-energy French-taco counter where Porta Lodovica's student-driven food scene meets Ayyoub Chahidi's social-media following, Steven Basalari's restaurant entrepreneurship and an oversized griddled-wrap format adapted around halal meat and Italian ingredients.

Set along Viale Col di Lana near Corso San Gottardo and just steps from the former Porta Lodovica alignment, the restaurant occupies a southern-Central Milan corridor shaped by the expansion of the city beyond its vanished defensive walls. Four street-facing windows open the compact operation toward the avenue, with bold graphics and a brightly illuminated counter giving the storefront an immediate fast-food character. Ordering moves through digital touchscreens, allowing the composition of a taco to be adjusted before preparation begins behind the counter. Seating remains secondary to the production line, keeping attention on tortillas being filled, folded into rectangles and pressed on the grill for customers eating in or carrying food away. The result is a Porta Lodovica counter whose visual immediacy and rapid customization translate a social-first business into a physical fast-food operation.

Ayo Tacos is best known for turning Ayyoub Chahidi's preexisting French-taco idea into the winning project of an entrepreneurial contest launched by Steven Basalari, creating a partnership that opened its first Milan restaurant on February 7, 2025. Chahidi had moved from Morocco to Italy at four, worked summers as a greengrocer during middle school, waited tables on weekends between 15 and 17 and completed his studies as an electrical technician before an apprenticeship introduced him to that profession. Social media redirected the trajectory: he began producing comedy and fashion content with his brother, eventually building a TikTok audience exceeding one million followers and discussing Ayo Tacos publicly before Basalari announced his competition. Followers pushed Chahidi to enter; a submission video generated millions of views, Basalari selected him among three finalists and the public vote delivered the victory. Basalari brought an established restaurant-growth model from his partnership with Donato De Caprio in Con Mollica o Senza, joining Chahidi's concept to an entrepreneur whose businesses had already demonstrated the commercial reach of creator-led food brands. The opening generated €134,000 through its two tills during its first 38 days, supplemented at that stage by €1,500-€1,600 in daily delivery orders, prompting Basalari to announce plans for another Ayo Tacos location. Chahidi's role subsequently developed from creator to entrepreneur: by February 2025 he was presenting the Ayo Tacos case at The Salty Circle for food-retail professionals, and in January 2026 he appeared at the PROMUS Talk on entrepreneurship and Islamic finance. Payper Agency later attributed 150 million views to Ayo Tacos communications, 96 percent organic, quantifying the extraordinary reach of the social mechanism that had first connected Chahidi with Basalari.

A large wheat tortilla establishes the French-taco format, receiving meat, fries, cheese and sauce before being folded into a compact rectangle and grilled until the exterior tightens around the filling. The Ayo Taco combines chicken with Ayo sauce, Ayo Cheese, sliced cheese and fries, concentrating soft meat, melted dairy and fried potato inside the pressed tortilla. Steven Taco shifts toward minced beef with burger sauce, Ayo Cheese, mozzarella and fries, connecting Chahidi's product with his business partner through one of the named combinations. Mix Taco joins chicken and minced beef with burger sauce, Ayo Cheese and purple cabbage, adding crunch and a fresher vegetable note to the heavier filling. A fried customizable version takes the format further through an additional crisp exterior, and the Smash Taco uses a double beef patty, burger sauce, Edamer, fried onion, pickles and fries to push the concept toward smash-burger territory. Halal meat remains fundamental across the operation, giving Chahidi's Moroccan-Muslim background a concrete role in the product alongside Italian additions such as pesto and Parmigiano Reggiano that broaden the French-taco template beyond its Franco-Maghrebi origins.

Ayo Tacos works as the casual endpoint for an afternoon following Porta Lodovica from Renaissance pilgrimage architecture through postwar Italian functionalism and the public landscape created as Milan expanded across former agricultural ground.

Begin at Santa Maria presso San Celso, whose rebuilding gathered Gian Giacomo Dolcebuono, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, Cristoforo Solari and later Galeazzo Alessi into a construction history extending across generations. Dolcebuono and Amadeo developed the polygonal tiburio during the 1490s, Agostino de Fondutis modeled Apostles for its twelve niches in 1502 and Solari began the marble-and-brick entrance atrium in 1505; Alessi supplied the later façade design, concentrating successive phases of Lombard Renaissance architecture around a sanctuary reached historically through Porta Lodovica. Continue to Università Bocconi Via Sarfatti 25, begun in 1937 under Giuseppe Pagano and Giangiacomo Predaval and inaugurated on December 21, 1941 as the university's new headquarters. Pagano, an important figure in Italian Rationalism who later joined the antifascist resistance and died at Mauthausen in April 1945, developed the building during a politically fraught period that also saw the university affected by Fascist racial laws, giving its severe functional architecture a history inseparable from the pressures surrounding Italian intellectual life during the late 1930s. Conclude at Parco Alessandrina Ravizza, anticipated by the 1889 Beruto plan and created between 1903 and 1905 as surrounding agricultural land entered urban development. Designer Tettamanzi divided the original rectangular park between a geometric Italian garden and a more naturalistic English section, and its later dedication honored Alessandrina Ravizza, whose Milanese work addressed abandoned children and women's access to education. The progression moves from a Renaissance sanctuary assembled through successive architectural masters through Pagano's functionalist university commission into Tettamanzi's public landscape for an expanding district, tracing three major episodes in the architectural and social formation of Porta Lodovica.
