Children’s Pool La Jolla

Sea lions lounging on the rocks at La Jolla Cove in San Diego

The Children's Pool is a sheltered cove where waves soften, seals bask, and ocean meets shore in perfect balance.

Originally built in the 1930s as a safe swimming area for local kids, this spot has since transformed into one of La Jolla's most beloved and debated landmarks, a sanctuary where people and wildlife coexist in quiet harmony. The semicircular sea wall holds back the Pacific's full power, creating glassy water that glimmers under the sun. On the rocks and sand below, harbor seals lounge lazily, pups nuzzle their mothers, and visitors gather to watch the tide rise and fall. Few places capture the rhythm of San Diego's coast quite like this, the sound of surf against stone, the chorus of sea lions echoing from nearby cliffs, and the gentle hush that reminds you nature always has the final word.

The Children's Pool was a gift to the city from philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, who funded the construction of its sea wall in 1931.

At the time, it provided rare safe swimming conditions for children in an area dominated by strong surf. Over the decades, seals began claiming the beach as a resting and birthing site, turning it into an unplanned but thriving marine sanctuary. Today, it's part of the San Diego-La Jolla Ecological Reserve, and access to the sand is restricted during pupping season (December through May) to protect newborns. From the elevated walkway above, visitors can watch the colony go about its daily rituals, sleek bodies gliding through the shallows, soft barks echoing across the cove, and the occasional splash as one slides back into the sea. It's a living example of how nature reclaims even the most human-made spaces.

The Children's Pool sits along Coast Boulevard, just a short stroll from La Jolla Cove and Ellen Browning Scripps Park.

It's a must-stop on any coastal walk through the village, especially at golden hour when light spills across the sea wall and the water turns molten gold. Street parking is available nearby, and benches along the promenade make perfect perches for seal-watching. Bring binoculars if you'd like a closer look, or simply lean on the railing and listen to the waves. For photographers, low tide reveals rippling reflections and rocky textures ideal for close-up shots. Afterward, continue down to the La Jolla Tide Pools or grab coffee at Brockton Villa Restaurant, where ocean views stretch endlessly. The Children's Pool isn't just a viewpoint, it's a moment of stillness where the pulse of the Pacific feels intimate, gentle, and utterly alive.
