Jasmine Thai Roppongi, Tokyo

Jasmine Thai Roppongi is a polished Thai restaurant where Roppongi's international dining culture, traditional recipes, Thai-grown ingredients and founder Douanruthai Takagi's two-decade project converge inside the company's original Tokyo dining room.

Set just off Gaien-Higashi-dori near Iikura Katamachi and just steps from Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo, the second-floor restaurant surrounds the table with warm timber and decorative pieces acquired in Thailand. Thai chefs work with imported river prawns, fresh herbs and Thai rice across curries, stir-fries, noodles and seafood, keeping aromatic ingredients prominent even when chile levels are moderated for a broad Tokyo clientele. That balance has remained central as the restaurant grew from a single Roppongi operation into the foundation for locations across Tokyo. The result is a Roppongi restaurant where a distinctly Thai dining room and kitchen have retained their original purpose through more than twenty years of expansion.

Jasmine Thai Roppongi is best known for beginning the Jasmine Thai company on November 29, 2004, when representative director Douanruthai Takagi opened the first restaurant with the goal of introducing Thai culture to a wider Japanese audience. The company itself had been founded on May 31 that year with Β₯10 million in capital, making the Roppongi opening the first public stage of the business. Takagi built the restaurant around Thai chefs, traditional recipes and a dining room furnished with decorative pieces purchased in Thailand, pairing cultural immersion with food at a moment when Thai and other Southeast Asian cuisines had a substantially smaller presence in Tokyo. Fresh herbs sourced directly from growers and river prawns imported from Thailand strengthened the connection between the Roppongi kitchen and the cuisine Takagi wanted to represent. The restaurant received Thai Select recognition in 2007, the same year a second Jasmine Thai opened in Yotsuya. Expansion subsequently reached Yaesu in 2011, Nihonbashi Muromachi in 2012, Otemachi and Ikebukuro in 2013, followed by newer formats including Jasmine Thai Express and ThaiStreet by Jasmine Thai. The original Roppongi restaurant reached its twentieth anniversary in November 2024 as the founding dining room of a Tokyo restaurant group that had grown far beyond the single operation Takagi opened in 2004.

Tom yum goong concentrates the kitchen's approach into a broth driven by prawn, chile, herbs and bright acidity, allowing fragrance and heat to rise together before the richer dishes arrive. Green curry deepens the progression through coconut milk and aromatic herbs, coating meat and vegetables in a sauce whose sweetness softens the chile. Pad Thai changes both texture and seasoning through stir-fried rice noodles, tamarind-led sweetness and the crunch of garnishes, providing a drier counterpoint to the curries and soups. Thai river prawns move seafood toward a more substantial centerpiece, drawing on an ingredient the company imports from Thailand specifically to preserve the character of the cooking. Jasmine Thai Roppongi makes these changes in acidity, coconut richness, herbs, chile and wok heat feel connected, sustaining the breadth of Thai cooking.

Jasmine Thai Roppongi works as the meal anchor for an afternoon tracing the eastern edge of Roppongi through private collecting, postwar design and one of Tokyo's defining experiments in contemporary architectural patronage.

Begin at Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo, where the Sumitomo family's collection extends from Chinese ritual bronzes assembled by fifteenth-generation head Tomoito Sumitomo into paintings, calligraphy and tea objects displayed through the institution's Tokyo branch. Continue to Axis Gallery, part of the Axis design complex opened in 1981, where exhibitions helped make Roppongi a center for encounters between Japanese designers and international architecture, industrial design and visual culture. Conclude at 21_21 Design Sight, opened in 2007 from an initiative led by Issey Miyake with Tadao Ando designing the building and Miyake, Naoto Fukasawa and Taku Satoh among its founding directors. The progression moves from Sumitomo collecting through the design culture fostered by Axis into Miyake and Ando's purpose-built institution, revealing the unusually concentrated creative history surrounding the original Jasmine Thai.
