Southeast Asian Izakaya Bagus Shibuya, Tokyo

Southeast Asian Izakaya Bagus Shibuya is a wanderlust-driven izakaya where Dogenzaka's after-dark appetite, Southeast Asian street-food traditions, cross-border drinking culture and pleasure of discovering unfamiliar flavors gather inside a room assembled from its owner's travels.

Set along Shibuya Chuo-gai near Dogenzaka and just steps from Shibuya Fukuras, Bagus occupies the second floor of a compact building within the web of drinking streets immediately west of Shibuya Station. Furnishings and decorative objects collected by the owner across Southeast Asia fill the room, giving its 23 seats the density and informality of a personal travel collection carried back to Tokyo piece by piece. Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian references share the space without collapsing the restaurant into a single national tradition, matching a district built around continual encounters between Japanese youth culture and ideas arriving from abroad. The result is an captivating Dogenzaka hideaway where the owner's accumulated travels turn a small upstairs dining room into an evening spanning several corners of Southeast Asia.

Southeast Asian Izakaya Bagus Shibuya is best known for translating its owner's extensive travels across Southeast Asia into a restaurant filled with personally collected furnishings and a kitchen shaped by dishes encountered across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and neighboring countries. The restaurant first operated at 1-29-1 Shoto before moving to its present Dogenzaka address, carrying the Bagus name into a far more central position beside Shibuya Station while remaining independent of the Japanese billiards-and-darts chain bearing the same name. A long-running commitment to specialist ingredients connects the kitchen with Melinda Farm in Chiba, whose directly supplied vegetables support Bagus's extensive use of coriander and Asian herbs across the cooking. Former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano later featured the restaurant through her YouTube presence, while Bagus's signature Teba Bakudan passed 48,000 cumulative sales and became the clearest numerical marker of a restaurant whose following grew around an unusually personal interpretation of Southeast Asian drinking food.

Teba Bakudan stuffs oversized Thai-style chicken wings with a savory filling before frying them until the exterior crisps around meat and juices, creating a substantial drinking snack designed to stand beside cold beer. Banh xeo shifts the table toward Vietnam through a crisp turmeric-colored crepe folded around pork, shrimp and vegetables, while nuoc cham and fresh herbs bring acidity and aromatic lift against the fried surface. House-made pakseiji works coriander directly into sausage prepared and stuffed at the restaurant, while coriander roots and Asian herbs deepen the broth used for the limited coriander-wrapped pork hot pot. Asian beers, Vietnamese spirits, Thai rum and Spy wine coolers extend the meal across the region's drinking traditions, allowing grilled, fried, fermented, herbal, sour and chile-driven flavors to move through the evening alongside bottles rarely gathered on one Tokyo izakaya table.

Southeast Asian Izakaya Bagus Shibuya works as the dinner stop in an afternoon following the architecture and commercial experiments that repeatedly altered the western side of Shibuya Station.

Begin at Shibuya 109, opened in April 1979 as Fashion Community 109 after Tokyu spent years coordinating redevelopment with 60 landowners, with Minoru Takeyama designing the cylindrical building before its late-1990s concentration on teenage women's fashion helped make Dogenzaka an international reference point for Japanese youth style. Continue to Shibuya Mark City, opened in April 2000 as a 138,620-square-meter station complex combining the Keio Inokashira Line terminus with a 25-story hotel tower, 23-story office tower, shops and highway-bus facilities across a site connecting directly into Shibuya's rail network. Conclude at Shibuya Fukuras, completed in 2019 with Tezuka Architects as design architect and Nikken Sekkei as master architect, rising 103 meters across 18 above-ground floors while rebuilding the former Tokyu Plaza Shibuya site beside the station's west exit. The progression moves from Takeyama's cylindrical fashion experiment through the station-spanning scale of Mark City into Tezuka Architects' crystalline Fukuras before Bagus turns Dogenzaka's history of absorbing outside influences toward an owner who brought pieces of Southeast Asia home from his own travels.
