Via Teodosio, Milan

Via Teodosio is a layered corridor where CittΓ  Studi's residential character meets the historic western boundary of Lambrate, interwar metropolitan expansion and an industrial complex built to sustain Milan's tram network.

Running through CittΓ  Studi between Via Pacini, and the blocks beyond Via Casoretto, the corridor follows the old western edge of Lambrate through a dense residential district shaped during Milan's twentieth-century expansion toward the former independent municipality. Mature street trees, continuous apartment faΓ§ades and rounded corner buildings establish a strong residential enclosure before the immense brick frontage of the ATM complex changes the scale near Via Casoretto. Pedestrian movement establishes its primary rhythm through successive intersections with Via Vallazze, Via Porpora and Via Casoretto, linking the academic territory around Piola with streets historically oriented toward Lambrate. Interwar apartment buildings introduce curved balconies and emphatic corner treatments, then the tram workshops replace domestic scale with long industrial elevations and entrances created for an entirely different form of movement. The result is a corridor where the former edge of Lambrate, 1930s residential architecture and Milan's tram infrastructure remain legible within the same north-south street.

Via Teodosio is best known for the Officina Generale Teodosio, the vast ATM complex whose construction established the street as one of the principal technical centers of Milan's tram system. Work on the central bay and the Via Teodosio entrance was underway in 1929, and the main workshop was operating at the corner with Via Casoretto by 1930. The complex incorporated specialized departments for tram repair, woodworking and forging alongside technical and administrative offices, concentrating multiple stages of vehicle maintenance within one industrial compound. A traverser moved tramcars laterally between workshop tracks, an element that remained part of the facility into the twenty-first century. The adjoining Leoncavallo depot opened toward Via Teodosio as part of the same transport territory, linking storage and maintenance functions across an unusually extensive site. Its workforce acquired a different historical significance during the Fascist period, when employees organized clandestine political activity inside the workshops. Teodosio workers became a driving force in the Milan tram workers' strike of March 1943, disabling vehicles by removing their control handles and helping halt public transport for almost four days before arrests and compulsory mobilization restored service. The workshops returned to the center of political action during Milan's Liberation, giving an industrial facility created for tram maintenance a direct role in the city's wartime resistance.

Residential construction produced a separate architectural chapter at Via Teodosio 34, where Alessandro Cairoli and Tito Bassanesi Varisco designed a corner apartment building completed in 1933. The structure occupies the intersection with Via Vallazze and turns through the junction with a broad curved elevation, replacing the sharp urban corner with a continuous sweep of faΓ§ade. Rounded balconies extend that geometry across successive floors, their projecting slabs creating strong horizontal bands around the curved volume. A pale stone base anchors the lower level beneath smooth upper elevations, and recessed balconies cut into the central portion of the composition before the roofline follows the same rounded profile above. The building emerged during the decade in which residential development was consolidating the territory between CittΓ  Studi and Lambrate, translating the geometry of a street intersection into the principal architectural device of an apartment house. Cairoli and Bassanesi Varisco consequently gave Via Teodosio a highly legible interwar corner whose curved mass remains one of the corridor's strongest departures from the surrounding rectilinear street walls.

Via Teodosio works as the anchor to an exploration of CittΓ  Studi through the creation of Milan's purpose-built university quarter, an experimental public swimming complex and one of Piero Portaluppi's most intricate residential commissions.

Begin at Politecnico di Milano - Campus Leonardo, whose move to the former Cascine Doppie fields carried the institution from Central Milan into a purpose-built academic district completed in 1927. Gaetano Moretti and Augusto Brusconi conceived the original scheme, and Francesco Belloni, Giannino Ferrini and Vittorio Verganti developed the later design after the First World War interrupted construction. Six symmetrically arranged buildings occupied 50,000 square meters, connected through covered passages and underground galleries; the rectorate tower received two bells transferred from Palazzo della Canonica, including one inscribed with 1863, the year of the Politecnico's foundation. Continue to Piscina Romano, where Luigi Lorenzo Secchi translated ideas he had published in 1928 into an open-air swimming complex completed the following year. Secchi's prototype centered on a 4,000-square-meter pool intended for 1,500 bathers, aligned with a principal service building and accompanied by smaller shower and changing structures. The commission belonged to a broader attempt to systematize public swimming architecture through a repeatable technical model adaptable to different sites, placing architectural experimentation directly beside the emerging university district. Conclude at Casa Corbellini-Wassermann, designed by Piero Portaluppi between 1934 and 1936 as a five-story residence whose restrained exterior conceals exceptionally elaborate spatial and decorative work. Portaluppi wrapped the principal levels in horizontal bands of pink and gray Ornavasso marble, opened the reinforced-concrete structure through broad windows and placed a massive marble spiral staircase toward the private garden. That staircase had already appeared in the temporary Casa del Sabato per gli sposi created by Portaluppi with BBPR for the 1933 Milan Triennale, allowing an experimental exhibition element to acquire permanent form inside the residence. The progression moves from Moretti and Brusconi's new academic district through Secchi's experiment in standardized public swimming architecture and onward to Portaluppi's conversion of a Triennale design into a permanent marble staircase, connecting education, civic architecture and residential experimentation across CittΓ  Studi.
