Via Tonale, Milan

Via Tonale is a commanding corridor where Centrale's metropolitan character meets twentieth-century railway engineering, Rationalist architecture and the northern expansion that absorbed the former territory of Greco into modern Milan.

Running through Centrale between Via Melchiorre Gioia, and the eastern approaches to Milano Centrale, the corridor crosses Via Copernico and Via Ponte Seveso before reaching the immense railway embankment beside Sottopasso Mortirolo, placing residential streets and one of Milan's largest pieces of transport infrastructure within the same compact sequence. Continuous apartment faΓ§ades and tree-lined sections establish an enclosed western approach before the railway mass changes the street's proportions through retaining walls, tunnel openings and the elevated tracks extending above the surrounding blocks. Pedestrian and surface-transit movement establishes the primary rhythm as Via Tonale carries circulation across the northern side of Centrale through a succession of intersections whose scale expands markedly near the station. Early twentieth-century housing, brick institutional architecture and the immense engineered edge of the railway introduce another register, preserving the physical consequences of the period when this former fringe between Milan and Greco became a dense metropolitan district. The result is a corridor where residential expansion, railway engineering and twentieth-century architecture remain unusually legible around the northern edge of Milano Centrale.

Via Tonale is best known for forming the northern approach to Sottopasso Mortirolo, an engineering work created with the elevated railway infrastructure of the new Milano Centrale and conceived to carry road and tram movement beneath its tracks. The replacement station was designed as a terminus whose running lines approached the city on an embankment elevated 7.4 meters above street level, allowing traffic to pass beneath the railway instead of severing the expanding northern districts. Sottopasso Mortirolo divided that movement among three openings, with lateral passages assigned to pedestrians and road vehicles and a central passage conceived for trams. Tracks were installed along Via Tonale and connected with the tram route on Via Ponte Seveso in preparation for that system. The intended tram operation never began, leaving rails that were subsequently removed and an engineered central passage. The trolleybus network eventually occupied that central opening, bringing the 90 and 91 outer circular services through infrastructure conceived for an earlier generation of electric transport. A protected central trolleybus corridor subsequently reached the Via Tonale sector in August 1983 as the Stelvio-Tonale section of a larger program developed around the outer circular route. Via Tonale consequently carries a rare piece of Milanese transport history in which an unrealized tram scheme, a purpose-built railway underpass and the later trolleybus network occupy successive chapters of the same engineered passage.

Caserma Fabio Filzi introduced a separate architectural chapter at the corridor's eastern end in 1935 through Eugenio Faludi, an architect associated with the Movimento Italiano per l'Architettura Razionale. Faludi designed the angular brick complex for the Gruppo Rionale Fabio Filzi and invited sculptor Leone Lodi to contribute works to its architectural program. The Via Tonale elevation uses a large ribbon window arranged across three levels, with regular first-floor openings interrupted by a stone-clad structural element. Travertine wraps the corner toward Via Fabio Filzi, where an immense sculptural relief by Lodi rises vertically across the faΓ§ade. Red brick, pale stone and extended horizontal glazing place industrially inflected surfaces beside a highly controlled Rationalist composition. The commission gave a substantial public building to territory undergoing rebellious physical change during the same decade, inserting Faludi and Lodi's collaboration directly into the dense blocks north of the railway station. Its survival preserves a concentrated example of architecture and sculpture conceived as a single composition during the interwar transformation of this part of Milan.

Via Tonale works as the anchor to an exploration of northern Milan through a fifteenth-century country residence, a Renaissance sanctuary built around a healing spring and a twenty-first-century tower recognized internationally for high-rise architecture.

Begin at Villa Mirabello, whose origins reach the first half of the fifteenth century, when the property belonged to Filippo Maria Visconti before Giovanni Mirabello acquired it and supplied the name that survives. Pigello Portinari, director of the Medici bank in Milan, later transformed the estate into a country residence, with Michelozzo connected to its construction and expansion; Portinari's brother Azareto subsequently entrusted Bartolomeo da Prato, a follower of Vincenzo Foppa, with oversight of its decoration. Ludovico il Moro stayed at the villa with his forces on February 4, 1500 during his attempt to recover Milan, adding a major Sforza episode to a residence whose surviving pointed windows, terracotta frames and internal loggia preserve its Quattrocento character. Continue to Santa Maria alla Fontana, where construction began in spring 1508 beside a spring associated with healing and a preexisting Marian image. Giovanni Antonio Amadeo served as architect for a complex organized around a square lower chapel with a twelve-part flattened dome, two porticoed courtyards and spaces intended to accommodate people seeking the spring's waters. Visconti heirs contributed land, local lay patrons participated in the undertaking and Benedictines from San Simpliciano held ecclesiastical jurisdiction, producing a commission whose origins combined religious devotion with a site already known for healing. The Padri Minimi di San Francesco di Paola received the unfinished complex in 1547 and developed a convent around its courtyards, carrying Amadeo's early sixteenth-century architecture into a larger religious institution. Conclude at Palazzo Lombardia, designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners with Caputo Partnership and Sistema Duemila after their team prevailed in an international competition. The complex combines four curving lower buildings with a 160-meter tower and a covered central piazza, creating an architectural composition in which the high-rise emerges from a sequence of interconnected volumes. Construction advanced from 2007, and on May 8, 2009 the tower surpassed 127.4 meters to become Milan's tallest building at that moment. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat named Palazzo Lombardia Best Tall Building Europe in 2012, making the project the first Italian winner of the regional distinction. The progression moves from Portinari and Michelozzo's Quattrocento country residence through Amadeo's sanctuary organized around a healing spring and onward to Pei Cobb Freed's internationally recognized tower, connecting aristocratic retreat, Renaissance religious architecture and twenty-first-century high-rise design across northern Milan.
