The Square Hotel Ginza, Tokyo

The Square Hotel Ginza is a sociable design hotel where Ginza's mercantile history, architectural precision, creative commerce and culture of exchange converge within Solare Hotels and Resorts' contemporary interpretation of the urban square.

Set along Showa-dori near Ginza Marronnier-dori and just steps from Kabukiza Theatre, the 16-storey steel building was developed by Tokyo Tatemono, designed and constructed by Shimizu Corporation and completed in 2018 with Seitaro Design supervising the interiors. The 5,671-square-meter project occupies a compact 479-square-meter site in Ginza 2-chome, the same section of the district where Tokugawa Ieyasu's shogunate transferred its silver-mint organization from Sunpu in 1603 and created the association that ultimately gave Ginza its name. Solare conceived the hotel around the European square as a historical meeting ground for commerce, community and culture, translating that civic archetype into a property intended to connect travelers with the surrounding district. The result links Tokyo Tatemono, Shimizu Corporation, Seitaro Design and Solare Hotels and Resorts through a building whose social premise echoes the exchanges that have defined Ginza since the shogunate established its silver economy here more than four centuries ago.

The Square Hotel Ginza is best known for opening on November 9, 2018 as the inaugural property of Solare Hotels and Resorts' new the square hotel brand, beginning a concept that Solare extended to Kanazawa later that same month. Solare president Osamu Inoue positioned the brand within the company's wider mission of building hotels around the histories and cultures of their districts, while the Ginza property sharpened that philosophy into the role of a β€œconcierge connecting Ginza,” making relationships among people, food, objects and information central to its identity. BUNDOZA became the public-facing expression of that idea, placing a cafΓ© and bar between the street and reception so the transition into the hotel passed through a social space conceived for interaction between staying guests and the surrounding city. The Square Hotel Ginza established a chain from Inoue's corporate philosophy through the new brand and into BUNDOZA, turning Solare's first square property into the prototype for a hotel model built around participation in its neighborhood.

The hotel's fifth anniversary in 2023 pushed that connective philosophy into a new creative network through CLOUDY, the fashion brand developed by DOYA Co., Ltd. under founder and CEO Hayato Doji around employment, education, health and environmental initiatives in Ghana. CLOUDY supplied its CHILL OUT textile for a year-long collaboration room beginning November 9, 2023, while proceeds supported CLOUDY CREATIVE ACADEMY, extending the project from textile design into vocational training for future creators. DOYA's collaboration joined a broader sequence that year encompassing New York fair-trade vegan chocolate maker Raaka, Miyazaki soybean initiative Miyadaizu and model Maki Kiriyama, whose photography exhibition accompanied her work promoting adoption events for rescued dogs. Hayato Doji, CLOUDY CREATIVE ACADEMY, Raaka, Miyadaizu and Maki Kiriyama consequently carried Solare's original square concept beyond architectural metaphor, turning the hotel's fifth year into a program of named collaborations connecting Ginza hospitality with fashion, food, photography and social enterprise.

The Square Hotel Ginza works as the anchor for an afternoon tracing how performance, architecture and private patronage shaped the cultural institutions surrounding Ginza and neighboring Kyobashi.

Begin at Kabukiza Theatre, opened in 1889 through journalist and playwright Fukuchi Genichiro and financier Chiba Katsugoro before Shochiku assumed management in 1914, establishing a theatrical institution repeatedly rebuilt after fire, earthquake and wartime destruction before Kengo Kuma and Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei shaped its fifth incarnation within Kabukiza Tower. Continue to Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, where Mitsubishi reconstructed Josiah Conder's 1894 Queen Anne-style office building on its original Marunouchi site after the first structure was demolished in 1968, using surviving documentation and components to recover the building that had housed part of Mitsubishi headquarters and helped introduce Western office architecture to the district. Conclude at Artizon Museum, whose lineage begins with Bridgestone founder Shojiro Ishibashi opening his collection to the public in 1952 after a 1950 encounter with New York's Museum of Modern Art convinced him to place a gallery inside Bridgestone's Kyobashi headquarters; painter Hanjiro Sakamoto had earlier encouraged Ishibashi to preserve works by Shigeru Aoki, beginning the collection that the Ishibashi Foundation has carried forward. The progression moves from Fukuchi, Shochiku and Kengo Kuma's evolving theater through Conder and Mitsubishi's architectural legacy into Ishibashi, Sakamoto and Aoki's chain of artistic patronage, revealing the dense culture of creators, companies and institutions surrounding The Square Hotel Ginza.
