Oriental Pearl Tower Observation Deck

Observation deck inside the Oriental Pearl TV Tower with glass skywalk

The Observation Deck at the Oriental Pearl Tower is where Shanghai reveals itself in full, a 360-degree spectacle of glass, sky, and light that stretches from the Huangpu River to the horizon beyond Pudong.

Suspended in the air inside the tower's great silver sphere, the deck feels like a capsule floating above one of the world's most dynamic cities. Below, The Bund's historic colonnades gleam in soft amber while the futuristic spires of Pudong shimmer like circuitry across the skyline. What sets this experience apart isn't just the view, but the sensation: the way the city hums faintly through the glass, the subtle tremor of the tower in the wind, the way nightfall turns the river into a ribbon of mirrored light. Standing here, you don't just see Shanghai, you feel its pulse. Every reflection, every flicker of light, reminds you that this is a city forever reinventing itself.

The Observation Deck is divided across multiple levels, each offering its own encounter with height and wonder, but the 263-meter transparent skywalk remains the tower's most iconic experience.

Unveiled in 2009, this glass-floored ring was the first of its kind in China, allowing visitors to step out into open air with nothing but crystal-clear panels between their feet and the city 800 feet below. Engineers designed the structure using ultra-tempered laminated glass, each panel able to support several tons, creating both safety and the illusion of fragility. Above it, at 351 meters, the Space Capsule provides a quieter, more ethereal vantage, where clouds drift level with your gaze and aircraft glide below the horizon. The tower's lowest viewing platform, at 90 meters, captures a wider, more intimate view of the Huangpu's ferries and The Bund's limestone façades. Together, these decks form a vertical progression, from the human scale of the city's bustle to the near-silence of the stratosphere. Few realize that the glass deck was part of a symbolic architectural gesture: the circle of transparency was meant to mirror Shanghai's openness to the world during its rapid 21st-century ascent. It has since become one of the city's defining images, appearing in countless films, travel ads, and skyline portraits.

The Observation Deck is the highlight of any visit to the Oriental Pearl Tower, best experienced during the golden transition from sunset to nightfall.

Arrive via Lujiazui Station (Line 2) and enter through the tower's main concourse, signs clearly mark the elevator zones for each level. Begin with the Municipal History Museum at the base to ground yourself in old Shanghai before rising to the 263-meter Sky Deck, where the glass floor extends into open space. Visit around 5:30, 6:00 p.m., when the skyline glows in bronze light before the city's neon awakens. Allocate 60, 90 minutes for the full experience, including time to ascend to the Space Capsule for the city's highest accessible view, then return to the 267-meter Revolving Restaurant if you'd like to dine as the lights of Pudong swirl below. Tickets range from 160, 230 RMB, depending on deck access, and evening hours are typically less crowded after 8 p.m. For the most stunning photographs, step onto the glass ring just as the Huangpu River ferries begin to light up, their reflections shimmering beneath your feet. As you descend, the city feels different, almost softer, because from the Observation Deck of the Oriental Pearl Tower, you don't just see Shanghai's skyline; for a moment, you stand inside its heartbeat.
