Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Orlando

Reflections of Dr. Phillips Center glowing in Downtown Orlando evening light

Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater is an intimate performance venue where Downtown Orlando's creative community, contemporary theater design, artistic versatility, and architectural refinement foster one of Central Florida's premier spaces for emerging and established performers.

Set along South Magnolia Avenue near Anderson Street and just steps from Steinmetz Hall, this inviting theater combines a flexible thrust stage, horseshoe seating, exceptional acoustics, illuminated aluminum balconies, and a striking ceiling installation of thirty-two abstract artworks to create an immersive environment for theater, music, dance, comedy, film, and spoken-word performances. Thoughtfully engineered sightlines, adaptable staging configurations, and elegant architectural details ensure audiences remain closely connected to every performance. The result is a venue defined by artistic intimacy, technical versatility, and contemporary design.

Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater is best known for opening with the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on November 6, 2014 as a highly adaptable 294-seat performance venue whose flexible configuration, advanced production technology, and exceptional acoustics established a permanent home for Central Florida's regional arts organizations alongside Orlando's major Broadway and symphonic stages. Designed as part of Phase I of the $613 million performing arts center by Barton Myers Associates with executive architect HKS Architects and Baker Barrios Architects, the theater was conceived as a contemporary community performance space capable of accommodating live theater, chamber music, dance, comedy, lectures, educational programming, film presentations, and private events within a single adaptable environment. Its distinctive horseshoe configuration centers on a thrust stage that can extend into the audience, while the orchestra-level seating transforms into a flat floor through an integrated Nivoflex flooring system, allowing rapid conversion between theatrical productions, cabaret performances, banquets, receptions, and educational events. Architectural details including thirty-two ceiling-mounted abstract works by artist Tom McGrath, softly illuminated aluminum balconies, and carefully engineered acoustics reinforce the theater's unique visual identity while enhancing every performance. Since opening, the venue has become the cultural home for more than 190 regional arts organizations, hosting hundreds of locally produced performances each year and reinforcing the Dr. Phillips Center's commitment to supporting Orlando's creative community alongside internationally touring productions.

Flexible staging, transformable seating, contemporary architectural detailing, and outstanding acoustics allow the theater to accommodate an extraordinary range of artistic disciplines. Community-centered programming, architectural innovation, and exceptional operational versatility collectively establish Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater among Florida's finest small-scale performing arts venues.
