Otemachi Forest, Tokyo

Street-level view of Otemachi towers with trees and sunlight in Tokyo

Otemachi Forest is an extraordinary urban forest where Otemachi's financial prominence, ecological innovation, landscape architecture, and environmental stewardship establish one of the world's most ambitious green spaces within a modern business district.

Set along Otemachi Tower near Eitai-dori Avenue and just steps from Otemachi Station, this lush woodland sanctuary surrounds visitors with mature native trees, shaded pathways, layered understory planting, tranquil seating areas, and seasonal biodiversity that create the remarkable sensation of stepping into a natural forest at the heart of Tokyo's premier financial district. Dense canopies soften the surrounding skyline while birds, insects, and native vegetation flourish within an environment carefully designed to replicate the structure of a traditional Japanese woodland. Every pathway demonstrates how thoughtful landscape architecture can seamlessly integrate ecological restoration into one of the world's most intensely developed urban environments. The result is a public green space defined by environmental leadership, botanical authenticity, and one of Tokyo's most innovative landscape achievements.

Otemachi Forest is best known for transforming approximately 3,600 square metres, nearly one-third of The Otemachi Tower site, into a native urban forest using an innovative β€œpre-forest” methodology in which vegetation and soil were cultivated for approximately three years in Kimitsu City, Chiba Prefecture, before being transplanted to Central Tokyo upon the tower's completion between 2009 and 2013. Developed by Tokyo Tatemono and Taisei Corporation with landscape architect Michel Desvigne Paysagiste and Nihon Sekkei, the project introduced more than 200 native trees together with carefully established woodland soils, understory vegetation, and ecological succession strategies to mitigate the urban heat island effect, strengthen biodiversity, create a functioning ecological corridor connected to the Imperial Palace, and establish a self-sustaining forest ecosystem above an engineered structure spanning major underground transport infrastructure.

Botanists and landscape specialists selected native deciduous and evergreen species capable of naturally evolving over decades, allowing the woodland to mature through ecological processes. Rainwater retention systems, deep soil profiles, and layered vegetation improve thermal performance, support wildlife habitat, moderate stormwater runoff, and create a comfortable microclimate for office workers and visitors throughout the year. The project has received numerous environmental recognitions, including top-tier urban green space certifications, while its pioneering landscape methodology continues influencing sustainable urban redevelopment projects throughout Japan and internationally as a benchmark for integrating functioning ecosystems into dense metropolitan environments.

Otemachi Forest is best experienced as part of an exploration through Otemachi's celebrated civic spaces and contemporary architecture.

Begin at Imperial Palace Outer Grounds, where expansive gardens and centuries of imperial history establish the district's remarkable relationship between nature and the city before continuing to Otemachi Forest to experience one of Japan's most innovative ecological landscapes. Continue to Otemachi, Tokyo, whose striking skyline and contemporary architecture reveal the evolution of Tokyo's premier financial district. Conclude at Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, where one of Japan's finest restored railway landmarks provides a memorable finale celebrating architecture, urban planning, and the harmonious balance between historic preservation and modern development. The progression moves naturally from imperial landscapes to pioneering urban ecology before concluding through one of Tokyo's defining architectural icons, revealing why Otemachi Forest remains among the world's most influential examples of nature integrated into the modern metropolis.
