Premarché Gelateria & Alternative Junk, Tokyo

Premarché Gelateria & Alternative Junk is an inventive gelateria where Nakameguro's independent food culture, Nobuo Nakagawa's natural-food expertise, Italian gelato craft and Japanese ingredients converge across more than 40 rotating flavors.

Set in Kamimeguro near Meguro Ginza and just steps from Nakameguro Station, the Tokyo shop brings a Kyoto-born gelato project into the compact streets east of the railway. Milk-based flavors share the counter with extensive non-dairy and vegan selections, while Japanese sake, rice, matcha and roasted brown rice sit beside Belgian dark chocolate and Sicilian pistachio. Synthetic emulsifiers, synthetic stabilizers and synthetic food additives are excluded from production, pushing texture and body back toward careful recipe construction and the properties of the ingredients themselves. The result is a Nakameguro gelateria where Italian technique, Japanese pantry traditions and Nakagawa's decades in natural foods produce one of Tokyo's broadest approaches to contemporary gelato.

Premarché Gelateria & Alternative Junk is best known for bringing Nobuo Nakagawa's internationally awarded gelato to Tokyo in July 2018, little more than a year after Premarché Gelateria first appeared in Kyoto in April 2017. Nakagawa entered gelato after two decades in the natural-food industry, learned production in Italy and developed recipes without synthetic emulsifiers or stabilizers while incorporating Japanese ingredients and substantial vegan and non-dairy ranges. His first international competition attempt in 2017 ended without a prize, then the 2018 Associazione Italiana Gelatieri competition in Rimini brought third place in the world sorbet category and tenth place in the free-creation category less than a year after the Kyoto shop's debut. Nakagawa returned in 2019 and placed fifth in the world sorbet competition with a vegan red-wine-and-cassis creation, then earned placements in two categories again in 2020, including the chocolate category as its sole Japanese prizewinner, completing three consecutive years of international awards. The Nakameguro shop subsequently entered Tabelog's Ice Cream & Gelato Top 100 in 2023, giving the Tokyo branch its own national recognition five years after opening.

Milk gelato begins with the dense creaminess expected from Italian technique, while the non-dairy range uses plant ingredients to reach a similarly smooth body. Japanese ingredients take the counter somewhere more distinctive through sake, matcha, roasted brown rice and rice-based creations, letting grain, tea and fermentation enter textures associated with European gelato. Sorbets sharpen the progression through fruit and brighter acidity, with combinations such as salted lychee and grapefruit showing how the kitchen moves beyond familiar single-fruit formulas. Premarché Gelateria & Alternative Junk makes those shifts between dairy richness, plant-based creaminess, fruit acidity and Japanese ingredients central to the tasting, giving a single cup enough range to explain why Nakagawa's unconventional approach earned repeated recognition in Italy.

Premarché Gelateria & Alternative Junk works as the dessert destination within a Nakameguro route connecting the railway that accelerated the district's growth, an unusual contemporary-art institution and the riverside corridor that became one of Tokyo's best-known spring walks.

Begin at Nakameguro Station, opened with the Tokyu Toyoko Line in 1927, when the new railway accelerated commercial development around streets that had only begun receiving substantial housing during the preceding decade; the Hibiya Line's 1964 arrival strengthened the district's connection with Central Tokyo. Continue to Sato Sakura Museum, whose collection specializes in contemporary nihonga and places cherry-blossom painting at the center of an institution fittingly positioned near the Meguro River. Conclude along Meguro River, where rows of cherry trees frame the water through Nakameguro and turn the former industrial watercourse into a seasonal promenade closely associated with the neighborhood. The progression carries Nakameguro from railway-driven growth through contemporary Japanese painting and the river before Premarché Gelateria & Alternative Junk closes the route with Nakagawa's own meeting of Japanese ingredients and Italian craft.
