The Public Six, Tokyo

The Public Six is a sophisticated Japanese-style gastropub where Roppongi's international nightlife culture, cosmopolitan dining identity, sports-driven social energy and instinct for cross-cultural reinvention converge around domestic craft beer and Japanese interpretations of classic pub food.

Set along Imoarai-zaka near Roppongi-dori and just steps from Roppongi Hills, the room pairs vintage wood with deep seating, a long bar and subdued lighting before twelve monitors and a 100-inch screen reveal the venue's second personality. Domestic craft beer provides the natural starting point, moving from the house The Public Ale into rotating Japanese drafts while sake, domestic wine and whisky extend the drinking style beyond conventional pub expectations. Major sporting nights supply the payoff as the screens, eleven-speaker sound system and surrounding crowd redirect the room's restrained bar atmosphere toward collective reactions. The result is a Roppongi gastropub where Japanese drinking culture and international sports-bar energy occupy the same composition, giving dinner, drinks and live competition a coherent setting.

The Public Six is best known for opening on August 4, 2016 under Bagus as a Japanese-style fusion of the gastropub and sports bar, developed during Tokyo's countdown toward the 2020 Olympic Games with international patrons explicitly incorporated into the original concept. DD Group founder Atsuhisa Matsumura served as executive producer after developing Roppongi venue 1967, while Zetton founder Kenichi Inamoto joined as creative director and GLAMOROUS founder Yasumichi Morita designed the interior. Morita built the 62-tsubo space around vintage wood and a deliberate contrast between restrained bar culture and high-energy sports viewing, while twelve monitors, a 100-inch screen and eleven speakers supplied the technological structure for that transition. The opening food program reworked established pub dishes through domestic ingredients, and six Japanese craft beers formed the original draft concept alongside Japanese wine and sake, connecting the international public-house format with a deliberately domestic culinary and beverage identity.

Sakura-chip smoking gives the kitchen a recurring aromatic signature, carrying gentle wood smoke through a five-item appetizer assortment before smoked quail eggs and Hokkaido potato salad extend the flavor into smaller plates. Zao beef moves the meal toward deeper richness through coarse-ground pub meatballs and roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, while Kyoto Kujo green onion, shirasu and Setouchi lemon pull familiar pub forms toward Japanese produce and brighter salinity. The drinks follow the same logic as rotating domestic craft taps meet cocktails built around ingredients such as Setouchi lemon and Shizuoka coriander, then broaden into Japanese sake, wine and whisky. The Public Six turns that exchange between smoke, regional ingredients, substantial pub cooking and Japanese drinks into a culinary language that feels specific to Roppongi rather than transplanted from a British or American bar.

The Public Six works as the late-night culmination for a Roppongi route connecting contemporary art, postwar architecture and the district's long relationship with international culture.

Begin at Mori Art Museum, opened in 2003 atop Roppongi Hills Mori Tower under founding director David Elliott, establishing an international contemporary-art institution whose exhibitions have connected Japanese practitioners with artists and movements across Asia and the wider world. Continue to 21_21 Design Sight, opened in 2007 through an initiative led by Issey Miyake with architecture by Tadao Ando, whose folded steel roof responds to Miyake's concept of a single piece of cloth while the institution extends design inquiry beyond conventional product display. Conclude at The National Art Center, Tokyo, opened in 2007 inside Kisho Kurokawa's final major museum project, where an undulating glass facade fronts one of Japan's largest exhibition complexes and a collection-free model allows its galleries to change continuously through temporary programming. The progression moves through three institutions that frame Roppongi as a center of contemporary creative exchange before The Public Six carries that international character into Japanese craft beer, regional ingredients and the shared performance of live sport.
