The 747 Experience is best known for preserving Ship 6301, the first Boeing 747-400 ever built, after the historic aircraft accumulated more than 61 million miles before retiring from commercial service in 2015. Built by Boeing in 1988 as the prototype for the revolutionary 747-400 program, the aircraft first flew on April 29, 1988, served as a flight-test aircraft, and entered commercial service with Northwest Airlines in 1989 before joining Delta Air Lines following the 2008 Delta-Northwest merger. Rather than allowing the aircraft to be scrapped, Delta employees launched the Airloom Project, an employee-funded preservation initiative that relocated the 400,000-pound jumbo jet across airport roads to the Delta Flight Museum on April 30, 2016, where The 747 Experience officially opened on March 28, 2017.
