Thinker Space at Discovery Place Science, Charlotte

Thinker Space at Discovery Place Science is an inspiring innovation lab where Uptown Charlotte's STEM education, hands-on engineering, creative design, and maker culture transform curiosity into real-world problem solving.

Set inside Discovery Place Science along North Tryon Street near West 6th Street and just steps from the Charlotte Observer IMAX Dome Theatre, this collaborative makerspace combines professional fabrication tools, engineering workstations, design challenges, creative workshops, digital technologies, and open-ended experimentation that encourage visitors to invent, prototype, and build through active exploration. Flexible work areas, continually evolving projects, and collaborative learning environments empower visitors of every age to think like engineers, designers, scientists, and inventors. The result is an experience defined by innovation, creativity, and hands-on discovery.

Thinker Space at Discovery Place Science is best known for opening in 2017 as Discovery Place Science's dedicated makerspace, developed as part of the museum's comprehensive Level 3 transformation into a 5,000-square-foot innovation and design center inspired by the global maker movement and supported by founding sponsor Lowe's to cultivate engineering, collaboration, and design thinking through hands-on experimentation. Earlier that year, the laboratory operated in beta form while educators refined curriculum and visitor experiences before its public debut alongside the companion Think It Up exhibition on August 26, 2017. The space was conceived to move beyond traditional museum exhibits by emphasizing iterative problem solving, encouraging guests to prototype, test, fail, refine, and redesign using authentic fabrication techniques. Equipped with real tools and technologies, including woodworking equipment, sewing machines, soldering stations, laser cutters, 3D printers, and rapidly changing engineering materials, the lab introduces visitors to manufacturing processes increasingly used throughout science, engineering, architecture, industrial design, and advanced manufacturing. Rotating challenges regularly address real-world topics such as renewable energy, biomechanics, structural engineering, robotics, and product design, while workshops led by museum educators, local scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, and engineers reinforce Discovery Place's longstanding commitment to inquiry-based STEM education. As one of Discovery Place Science's signature learning environments, Thinker Space continues advancing the museum's mission of transforming passive observation into active invention while preparing future innovators through creativity, experimentation, and collaborative design.

Purpose-built fabrication stations, adaptable workshop layouts, and continually evolving project-based programming distinguish Thinker Space from conventional museum galleries by emphasizing the engineering design process over predetermined outcomes. Collaborative learning, authentic maker technologies, professional-grade tools, and sustained partnerships with educators and industry leaders continue expanding the laboratory's educational impact while reinforcing Discovery Place Science's reputation as one of the nation's leading hands-on science museums. Innovation-centered curriculum, experiential STEM education, and creative problem solving collectively establish Thinker Space among the Carolinas' premier maker laboratories.

Thinker Space at Discovery Place Science works as part of an exploration through Discovery Place Science's signature hands-on experiences.

Begin at Cool Stuff, where live physics demonstrations introduce the principles behind engineering before applying those concepts inside Thinker Space. Continue to the Charlotte Observer IMAX Dome Theatre, whose immersive giant-screen films expand scientific exploration through breathtaking visual storytelling. Conclude at World Alive, where living ecosystems and animal encounters provide a memorable finale celebrating the remarkable diversity of science and discovery. The progression moves naturally from scientific demonstration to creative invention before concluding with the wonders of the natural world, revealing why Thinker Space remains one of Discovery Place Science's most engaging learning environments.
