Lacquer Pavilion

Gardens and parasols at Suan Pakkad Palace Bangkok

The Lacquer Pavilion at Suan Pakkad Palace in Bangkok is a masterpiece in miniature, a golden sanctuary where every surface glows with the devotion and artistry of old Siam.

Nestled within the gardens of Suan Pakkad Palace, this 17th-century Ayutthaya-era structure captures the quiet grandeur of Thailand's classical design. Moved and meticulously restored by Prince Chumbhot of Nagara Svarga, it now stands as the crown jewel of the palace complex. From the outside, its dark teakwood walls and steep gabled roof suggest restraint, but step inside, and gold radiates from every direction. The Lacquer Pavilion doesn't just shimmer intricate, it transports visitors into an illuminated world where art, faith, and craftsmanship intertwine.

Originally built in the late 1600s, the Lacquer Pavilion was relocated from Ayutthaya Province to Bangkok in the mid-20th century to preserve it from decay.

Its interior walls are entirely covered in black lacquer and overlaid with gold leaf paintings depicting Jataka tales, moral stories from the Buddha's past lives, along with scenes of courtly life and celestial beings. The technique, called lai rot nam (“designs washed with water”), involves applying multiple layers of lacquer, etching patterns by hand, and filling them with gold to create shimmering, three-dimensional depth. Every figure is rendered with precision, graceful monks, mythical birds, and temples rising in endless perspective. The pavilion once served as a meditation retreat for nobles, and even today, standing within it feels like entering a world suspended between silence and eternity.

Visit in the late afternoon when sunlight filters through the surrounding trees, casting a warm glow that amplifies the gold interior.

Remove your shoes before stepping inside and let your eyes adjust slowly, the glimmer emerges gradually, revealing hidden details in every panel. Spend a few minutes seated on the polished floor, letting the space's stillness work its quiet spell. Afterward, stroll through the Suan Pakkad Palace gardens, where lotus ponds and wooden bridges complete the sense of calm. The Lacquer Pavilion doesn't just shimmer intricate, it preserves the timeless artistry of devotion, a golden echo from Ayutthaya that continues to illuminate the heart of Bangkok.
