Planet Trail

Summit tower on Uetliberg Mountain surrounded by dramatic skies

Zürich's Planet Trail is where science, nature, and imagination align, a cosmic walk through the solar system set against alpine horizons. Stretching from Uetliberg to Felsenegg, this trail transforms the six-kilometer ridge into a living model of space, with each planet represented by a sculpture placed at a scale of one to a billion. As you move between them, the vast distances of the cosmos collapse into something human, measurable, and deeply poetic.

The beauty of the trail isn't just in its design, it's in how it makes you feel small and infinite at once. You start near the “Sun,” glowing gold atop Uetliberg, then stride through the orbit of Mercury, Venus, and Earth as Zürich glimmers below. Each stop becomes a moment of reflection: how fragile our blue planet is, how immense the spaces between us truly are. The forest quiets, the wind hums like background radiation, and suddenly, astronomy feels intimate, as if the universe has drawn a map just for your steps.

Planet Trail (Planetenweg) was designed in 1992 by a team of Swiss astronomers and educators to give visitors a tangible sense of cosmic scale. Each planet marker is built to exact proportional distances and sizes, Neptune, for example, lies over six kilometers from the Sun model, just as it would in the real solar system, compressed by a billionfold.

Few hikers realize that every sculpture is crafted from locally sourced materials, grounding the astronomical concept in the geology of Zürich's own mountain ridge. The trail merges two forms of wonder, scientific curiosity and natural beauty, and has since become one of Switzerland's most quietly profound outdoor learning experiences. It's astronomy made tactile, a journey that bridges intellect and awe with every stride.

Begin at Uetliberg station and find the gleaming “Sun” sculpture near the lookout tower, your launch point into orbit. The path to Felsenegg takes about two hours on foot, weaving through forests, meadows, and panoramic overlooks where the lake and Alps seem to stretch forever.

At each planet stop, pause to read the informational plaques and soak in the view, especially around Saturn and Uranus, where the ridge opens wide to the southern skyline. Once you reach Felsenegg, take the cable car down to Adliswil and the S4 train back to Zürich. The best time to go is at sunrise or dusk, when the light feels otherworldly and shadows stretch like planetary rings. Planet Trail isn't just a hike, it's a reminder that even the smallest steps can carry you across worlds.
