Fernbank Forest

Fernbank Forest is a living extension of Fernbank's mission, where elevated walkways, whispering trees, and the hum of nature reconnect city dwellers with Georgia's ancient landscape.

Just beyond the museum's glass atrium, Fernbank Forest unfolds as an immersive outdoor experience, leading visitors through art installations, native gardens, and interactive play zones framed by towering oaks. Wooden bridges wind through the canopy, offering views of trickling creeks and sculptural pieces inspired by the rhythms of nature. At the trail's edge, the world deepens, Fernbank Forest, a 65-acre old-growth sanctuary, rises in hushed majesty. Here, some trees stretch over 300 years into the past, their branches filtering sunlight into a green cathedral. Together, Fernbank Forest invites you to step away from noise and step into something timeless.

Fernbank Forest is one of the last remaining stands of mature Piedmont forest in the entire Southeast.

Its ecosystem preserves what Atlanta looked like before development, a delicate web of oak, hickory, tulip poplar, and dogwood that still hums with native wildlife. The area's restoration, undertaken by Fernbank scientists, has reintroduced native species and cleared invasive plants to let the forest breathe again. Fernbank Forest acts as a modern bridge to that history, a sustainable design built for accessibility and discovery, featuring interactive exhibits that reveal how water, soil, and air sustain life. Even the wooden pathways are constructed from locally sourced, eco-certified materials. The blend of science, conservation, and artistry makes the experience as meaningful as it is beautiful.

Plan at least an hour to explore, more if you let yourself slow down.

Start with the Fernbank Forest trail to absorb the curated artistry of nature, pausing at the sensory stations or the play areas if visiting with children. Then continue into Fernbank Forest, where the paved path fades to dirt and the air grows cooler, quieter. The forest trail loops gently, leading you beneath ancient canopies where birdsong replaces city noise. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and allow space for reflection, this is less a hike than a pilgrimage into Atlanta's living past. Fernbank Forest remind us that nature isn't a place to visit, it's the home we momentarily forgot.
