Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, Denver

Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library is a landmark Five Points destination where African American history, cultural preservation, and community leadership converge within one of the nation's most significant Black research libraries.

Located at the gateway to Denver's historic Five Points and Welton Street Historic District, this remarkable institution connects extensive archival collections, museum exhibitions, public art, educational programming, and community gathering spaces that collectively preserve the story of African Americans throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West. Contemporary architecture, thoughtfully curated galleries, rare manuscripts, oral histories, rotating exhibitions, research archives, and welcoming public spaces create a cultural landmark where generations of historians, educators, artists, civic leaders, students, and families have safeguarded one of the region's richest historical legacies. Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library opened in 2003 as both a neighborhood library and nationally significant research center, preserving stories that might otherwise have been lost while strengthening Five Points' role as the cultural heart of Black Denver. The result is a destination defined by historical preservation, educational excellence, and enduring community significance.

Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library is best known for being one of only a handful of African American research libraries within American public library systems, preserving the history, culture, and contributions of African Americans throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West through its archives, museum, and research collections.

Conceived by former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and First Lady Wilma Webb, the library was created to ensure that the stories, achievements, photographs, manuscripts, and personal collections documenting Black life in the American West would remain accessible for future generations. Its three level facility combines a full service public library, an extensive research archive, and the Western Legacies Museum, where original artifacts, oral histories, rare documents, and immersive exhibitions chronicle centuries of African American history from the sixteenth century through the present day. Today, the library continues to welcome scholars, school groups, genealogists, and visitors from across the country while serving as both a cultural anchor for Five Points and an internationally respected center for preserving Western Black history. That extraordinary mission has established Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library as one of Colorado's most important cultural institutions.

Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library is best experienced as an exploration of Denver's African American heritage, civil rights history, and cultural landmarks.
